BRUNSWICK – A credit card skimmer was discovered this week in a gas pump on state Route 303 (Center Road) in Brunswick.
The device was discovered by staff from the Medina County Auditor’s office while doing routine inspections on all of the county’s gas pumps.
The Brunswick Police Department was notified and the device was removed.
Credit card skimming continues to be a serious identity theft problem across the country and Auditor Mike Kovack said his office is taking steps to assist local consumers.
“We have ordered security tapes to be attached to all gas pumps in the county,” Kovack said in a July 27 press release. “In the next couple of weeks, consumers should start to see this blue tape on local devices as they go to pump gas.”
The security tape reveals a voided side if it has been tampered with, warning consumers not to use that pump.
If consumers have any questions or suspect the use of a skimming device, contact Auditor Kovack at 330-725-9764 or your local law enforcement agency.
