NORTH ROYALTON – Another school board incumbent has expressed intent to seek re-election this November.
Dr. Susan Clark, the board of education’s current president, is pursuing a second four-year term.
Clark, 61, said this public service role is something that is extremely important to her and that this is an exciting time for the school district and something she wants to continue to be a part of.
“I want to seek re-election because I am excited for the future of our community,” she said. “I am a good listener and communicator and will continue to work with the members of the board and the administration to ensure that our schools meet the needs of our students.”
She is referring to the district’s bond issue voters approved in May that will construct one new centralized elementary school, renovate and upgrade the middle school and rebuild the ‘50s and ‘60s sections of the high school and renovate the ‘70s and ‘80s sections.
The school board is currently in the process of hiring an architect followed by a construction manager to design and build these projects.
Clark said she understands school operations and its challenges having spent her entire career serving in various facets of education, “having spent my entire professional career in public education as a teacher, administrator, college professor and attorney practicing in the area of education law.”
Last year the entire school board were recognized by the Ohio School Boards Association as being Northeast Ohio’s Most Outstanding School Board Team. The award was first given in 2015 by the OSBA, with three school boards earning it then. North Royalton was the sole board to receive this distinction last year out of a 19-county area. Clark said she is also proud to have served as the interim dean of The University of Akron’s LeBron James Family Foundation College of Education.
“I have had a successful career, raised wonderful and accomplished children and now enjoy three grandchildren,” she added.
In order to file petitions with the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections, board candidates need 75 valid voter signatures. The filing deadline is Aug. 9.
Clark and school board member Jackie Arendt are the only board incumbents up for re-election this November with terms expiring Dec. 31. Arendt pulled petitions earlier this summer and formally filed them July 12.
School Board Vice President Dr. John Kelly and members Anne Reinkober and Heidi Dolezal are in the middle of their terms and not up for re-election until 2019.
