STRONGSVILLE – Mark your calendar for June 3. The first Saturday of the sixth month offers an opportunity for area families to experience some free outdoor fun and entertainment in the city of Strongsville.

The Rotary Club of Strongsville’s Kidsfest and Duck Race takes place at the Metroparks Chalet from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life is held at Strongsville High School’s Pat Catan Stadium from 1 p.m. well into the evening.

Kidsfest and Duck Race

The fifth annual Kidsfest and Duck Race has become an early June tradition.

The Kidsfest portion of the event includes pony rides, face painting, inflatables, touch-a-truck, entertainment, food and more. Rumor has it that Cleveland Indians mascot Slider will make an appearance.

“The only thing that isn’t free is the food,” said event co-chair Tom Drost. “This is Rotary’s way of giving back to the community.”

The centerpiece of the event is the duck race. Rubber ducks are floated down the Rocky River and finish just before the bridge leading into the Chalet area.

Ducks can be adopted for $10 or a $20 for a flock of three at www.strongsvilleduckrace.com or on site the day of the event. First place pays $2,000, second place pays $1,500 and third place pays $1,000. Ducks launch at 2 p.m.

The great thing is you do not need be present to win. There was a person from California who purchased a duck online one year who ended up finishing in the money.

Attendees should park at the RTA lot off Pearl Road near Whitney Road where a free shuttle is available every 15 minutes.

Relay for Life

The annual Relay for Life American Cancer Society awareness and fundraiser event will take place at Pat Catan Stadium following a one-year hiatus while new field turf was installed.

The 2016 Relay for Life took place at Albion Middle School, which was razed a few months ago. The 2017 event should be bigger and better than ever. The weather should most certainly be improved.

A date change to early June from mid-May was done with an eye to the sky. Last year’s event was cut short due to bone-chilling temperatures and a steady rain to match. Even with those type of conditions, the event was a record setter in terms of funds raised.

Cancer is a serious topic, but there is lots of fun to be had at Relay for Life. This year’s theme is Luau for Life. There is entertainment with bands playing live music throughout the day and evening.

There will be inflatables, contests, games, raffles, dance performances, a cornhole tournament and much more.

Registration for the 2017 Strongsville Relay for Life takes place at 10 a.m. at Strongsville High School. The event will kick off on June 3 with a survivor’s lunch inside the school’s cafeteria at 11:30 a.m.

The opening ceremony takes place at Catan Stadium at 1 p.m. with a survivor’s lap around the track.
