I am hopeful our lawmakers will move toward a solution
To the Editor:
Few are lucky enough to travel to Washington, D.C. to advocate for what they are most passionate about, but recently I did.
As a part of the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) National Advocacy Conference, mortgage bankers from across the country gathered in Washington to educate legislators on ways they can support Ohioans looking to find affordable housing. We attended informational seminars, heard from key housing industry lawmakers, including Ohio Congressman Steve Stivers – who sits on the House Financial Services Committee – and we met with our Congressional Delegation.
During the conference, many issues that face the real estate finance industry were discussed, but there was one that stood out – reforming the housing finance system.
The housing finance system remains in limbo from the 2008 financial crisis. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac continue to dominate the mortgage industry – which has led to instability and vulnerability within the housing market.
Rep. Stivers and his colleagues on the House Financial Services Committee can end the status quo and replace it with a strong and vibrant system. I am hopeful that our voices were heard during our visit and lawmakers will soon move toward a policy solution.
