Ireland should adopt international gold standard in trans healthcare
IN ITS first ADC motion, the LGBTQI+ Forum called for the adoption of the WPATH (World Professional Association for Transgender Health) Standards of Care to be adopted as Ireland’s national framework for transgender healthcare.
Proposing the motion John Gilmore of the LGBTQIA+ Forum urged delegates to move beyond symbolism and embrace real policy-driven allyship. Highlighting that Ireland currently ranks lowest in the EU for transgender healthcare access, he said that WPATH was “gold standard, evidence-based care”, developed by experts, researchers, clinicians, and trans and gender diverse people themselves.
“It has been endorsed in many countries and by many international and national professional organisations. It’s not fancy or complicated. It’s based on things that we hold dear as nurses, affirmative care, person-centred care, multidisciplinary input, informed consent model,” he added.
Sarah Maher of the Executive Council said that nurses and midwives are the frontline of compassionate care, and urged delegates to “lead the way in transforming our health service”.
Martina Harkin Kelly,
Education Section, said that care must always align with the NMBI’s professional code of care, compassion and commitment.
The motion was carried.
