To celebrate 10 years of digital innovation by RalphLauren.com, Scharff Weisberg, MKG, and content creator United Visual Artists (UVA) collaborated to create an incredible combination of technology and artistry that uses Ralph Lauren’s fl agship store in New York City as its palette. A 3D architectural mapping system projected a nearly eight minute “4D” video experience that made the building’s walls to come to life and open up to expose a fashion show, a huge belt threading through the windows, a polo ball bursting through the façade, and other convincing effects—all rendered in 3D space. To accomplish the incredible task, Scharff Weisberg, working Ralph Lauren creative, MKG, and UVA, devised a projection setup that placed eight Christie S+20/S+16 projectors—four primaries and four back-ups—in portrait confi guration on the terrace of Ralph Lauren’s Rhinelander mansion across the street. Weatherproof awnings, fabricated to match the store’s décor, housed the projectors, while UVA D3 servers fed them content via fi ber-optic cabling. UVA’s program was created in a 3D environment, modeled on the D3 servers, and mapped to the building’s exact contours. “The project was a good example of how 3D projection mapping is all about the integrity of the content which, in this case, was extremely high,” said Scharff Weisberg President, Josh Weisberg. “The response from the viewing, media, and fashion community has been overwhelmingly positive.” Its size and weight (50 cm, 16 kg) belie its powerful feature set, which includes 14 colors and 17 gobos capable of producing a wide range of mid-air effect and making it highly versatile for a variety of uses and environments, from arenas to conference rooms. Its pan/tilt speed is on par with moving mirror fi xtures, and its fl exible beam width allows it to be used as either a wash or spotlight. On top of its many powerful features in a small and fl exible package, the Sharpy is incredibly energy-effi cient and cost effective at only 189 W and 350 VA per luminaire, with an average lamp life of 2,000 hours.
