That’s a wrap.

Brampton Ward 1 & 5 Councillor Elaine Moore has announced that she will be retiring from politics after the current Council term, in a statement obtained exclusively by Peel Weekly News.

“The 2018 municipal election will not see my name on the ballot,” said Moore, who has held her current position since 2003.

Explaining that the decision was not made lightly, she said that she needed to step aside in order to give others a chance to pursue a career in politics and serve the community.

“There are good people in our community, who have never run for political office, who have shown they have a lot to offer through volunteer work; and through their personal and financial investments in our city.”

Moore previously served in a number of roles with the City and Peel District School Board, including roles as a Trustee for Wards 7,8 and 9, then Trustee for Wards 1,3,4 and 5. She also served as Councillor Ward 1 from 2000 - 2003, and then Regional Councillor Wards 1 and 5 in 2003.

She has been involved with many initiatives throughout the city, including planning and infrastructure projects, growth management and health services.

Most recently, she stated that she would be working on moving a proposed safe injection on the Main Street corridor, after public outcry to the development.

Moore credited her family and friends with helping her make her decision to retire.

“Politics is a job that we can't do without the support and understanding of our family and friends ... (my family) have never once complained about sharing and sacrificing so I could pursue my passion of service to the community. I think they have waited long enough to have me all to themselves,” she said.

The next municipal election will be held on Monday, Oct. 22.

Candidate nominations and third party registrations can be filed beginning on May 1.
