Brandon Gonez’s energy is contagious, whether in person on TV or via email.

A proud Brampton native, Gonez has joined the cast of CTV’s Your Morning, a national show.

He’ll be at the desk with Anne-Marie Mediwake, Ben Mulroney, Lindsey Deluce and Melissa Grelo, doing weather and reporting.

Although he’s been on the air for few days learning the ropes, his official start is Sept. 5. Gonez is filling in for Kelsey McEwen.

“It means I get to wake up with Canadians from coast to coast to coast. It’s so cool! I get to work with amazing co-workers and we get to send people across this country on their day feeling informed about the news, weather and hot topics,” Gonez said.

Growing up, Gonez admired broadcast journalist Dwight Drummond: his presence on TV made Gonez’s desire to go into the industry seem more attainable.

“He, like my parents, [is] Jamaican and his story was always very inspiring especially for people in the Caribbean community. Plus, it was nice to see someone on TV who looked like me.

It made going into TV seem like an achievable goal. And look, it worked out!”

Gonez’s role on Your Morning is a source of pride for his close and humble family. It’s a celebration for them.

“My family immigrated from Jamaica with very little to start a new life in this amazing country. I’m so proud to be born here. But for my family, it shows that hard work and determination pay off.”

With Gonez being a fitness buff, the show’s hours mean a big change in his running routine. That energy is part of Gonez’s brand and he pulls from his background: authenticity, laughter, enjoyment “because no day is promised.”

He’s really pumped about this job and is already feeling connected to his new colleagues.

“In the mornings, we get to let loose a bit and for some weird reason I actually have a lot of energy in the mornings, which is good for this job I guess. I’m also a news guy at heart. I started my career as a news reporter / anchor before adding weather duties to my portfolio. So, I bring a wellrounded view on weather, news and all the hot topics.”

While at York University, Gonez and a friend started a YouTube talk show. That’s when Gonez realized he enjoyed telling stories and talking with people.

So he earned a Communications degree from York and a Television and Radio Certificate from Seneca@York. That degree led him to work in television in Smithers, B.C., Terrace, B.C., Regina, SK, Barrie, and now Toronto.

Gonez, who still lives in Brampton, grew up in Springdale and attended Mayfield Secondary School: “It’s an arts school and I went there for drama. Shout out to my favourite teacher, Mrs. Jane Kelk.”

So many things make him proud of Brampton: its diversity, the place where many people start their families, the fact that it’s growing and becoming big city, the entertainers and athletes that have come from Brampton; for example, Russell Peters, Alessia Cara and Tristan Thompson.

“I love that you can get all different types of food from the world.”

Along with the unique pubs and restaurants that are opening in Brampton, and as the leaves turn colour, one of Gonez’s favourite places in Brampton is Heart Lake Conservation Area and its natural beauty.

“Just like Brampton, this show is for everyone. So, tune in and lets have a laugh together during Your Morning.”
