Superintendent says nation’s future is “in good hands”

AKRON — When it comes to the next generation of leaders, America is “in good hands,” Brunswick Superintendent Michael Mayell told the students, parents and other audience members as part of the school’s 119th annual commencement May 20.
“I’m often asked about the students and graduates of today. The questions normally start with opinions and concerns about this next generation of leaders,” Mayell said, noting that his position has allowed him to interact with the students and to watch them develop into adults. “I have witnessed the efforts, abilities and character of many of the graduating classes during my years of education and I’m proud to say the class of 2018 has succeeded on the field, in performances, in the community and in the classroom.”
As part of the 652 Brunswick High School student who graduated at the James A. Rhodes Arena at The University of Akron May 20, 88 students graduated with an Ohio Honors Diploma. Likewise, 143 students graduated with Cum Laude (GPA of 3.0 to 3.499) honors; 55 (GPA of 3.5 to 3.749) with Magna Cum Laude honors and 104 with Summa Cum Laude (GPA of 3.75 or higher) honors.
Representing the class’ highest achieving students included Katherine Camper, Emily Craddock, Rachel Duke, Sophia Gemelas, Victoria Haupt, Nelson Le, Daniel Mikaelian, Michael Pistillo, Ashley Scheutzow and Adrian Slovenec, all of whom were recognized before their classmates as the top-10 students in the 2018 graduating class. All 10 of those individuals have cumulative grade point averages topping the 4.0 scale.
The class of 2018 also includes 61 members of the National Honor Society; eight members of the National Vocational Honor Society and six Honor Thespians.
Eleven members of the class also have registered to serve in the military upon graduation.
School Board President Grant Relic also addressed the crowd, along with this year’s commencement speakers, graduates Faythe Orcutt and Christopher Mobley.
Orcutt reminded her fellow graduates that true success stems from happiness and by inspiring others to be their best selves.
“Now, after four years here, all of us will reach success at some point in our lives and each of us in our own diverse ways,” Orcutt said.
Making it past the obstacles and learning more than just the subject material taught in class taught life lessons that will be valuable for years to come.
“We learned how to study, be patient, ask questions, be prepared and how to chase our curiosities,” she said.
Mobley elaborated in his speech, addressing the qualities that make Brunswick students among the most successful in Medina County, if not northeast Ohio.
“What we have cannot be bought with money or even taught in schools,” Mobley said. “We have a genuine passion for the things we do. We have a sense of community unmatched by any other school around here. We work hard for what we want and when we don’t get it, we try again.”
Mobley addressed the way students walk through the halls of the high school, past countless awards and trophy cases without even noticing.
“Winning is just what Brunswick does; it’s what we do,” he said. “No one is surprised when the marching band wins another competition because we always win. How could we lose? No other school around here has musicians who care about their art as much as ours do. Our sports teams are some of the best around and that’s not just because many of our best students are on those teams. It’s because they care about what they play.”
Mobley said the students at Brunswick High School all have passion, a sense of community and a solid work ethic. Because of that, he said, Brunswick is “so much more than just a high school.”
“We will be successful in what we do. We will make a difference. Because when I look out into the audience, I don’t see students. I see the leaders of tomorrow. I see people who will bring their success back to Brunswick and will continue to build our great community,” he said. “Most importantly, I see people who will always be there for one another

“We learned how to study, be patient, ask questions, be prepared and how to chase our curiosities,” she said.
Mobley elaborated in his speech, addressing the qualities that make Brunswick students among the most successful in Medina County, if not northeast Ohio.
“What we have cannot be bought with money or even taught in schools,” Mobley said. “We have a genuine passion for the things we do. We have a sense of community unmatched by any other school around here. We work hard for what we want and when we don’t get it, we try again.”
Mobley addressed the way students walk through the halls of the high school, past countless awards and trophy cases without even noticing.
“Winning is just what Brunswick does; it’s what we do,” he said. “No one is surprised when the marching band wins another competition because we always win. How could we lose? No other school around here has musicians who care about their art as much as ours do. Our sports teams are some of the best around and that’s not just because many of our best students are on those teams. It’s because they care about what they play.”
Mobley said the students at Brunswick High School all have passion, a sense of community and a solid work ethic. Because of that, he said, Brunswick is “so much more than just a high school.”
“We will be successful in what we do. We will make a difference. Because when I look out into the audience, I don’t see students. I see the leaders of tomorrow. I see people who will bring their success back to Brunswick and will continue to build our great community,” he said. “Most importantly, I see people who will always be there for one another
