Superintendent Aaron Sable says he is proud of sit-in protest held after school shooting

AKRON – A total of 589 graduates making up Medina High School’s Class of 2018, along with family and friends, packed into the JAR Arena at the University of Akron while avoiding a downpour outside May 26.
Although class members are leaving to go out into the world, graduate Emily Walburn said during opening remarks not to forget each other and others who may need help.
“The time to work together is here,” she said. “If we see others suffering or in need, we help them whenever possible. We must help one another, we must defend one another, we must unite together.”
After telling the class to clap for their parents and teachers who helped them along the way, Superintendent Aaron Sable also asked class members who are joining the military to stand up and be recognized.
“I am confident the education you received in Medina is amongst of the best in the state of Ohio, maybe even in the country,” he said. “We aimed to teach you that values matter equally. Amongst the host of ideals, Medina places a premium on character, community and freedom.”
Sable said he was especially proud of the sit-in protest held after the school shooting in Florida earlier this year, which he considered to be a gesture to promote school safety and unity.
“Despite your varying views, you all deserve safe schools,” he said.
Sable also encouraged the class to embrace life outside the “Medina bubble” and engage those with different viewpoints while remaining respectful. He said this is not always easy in the polarized society we live in, but it is important to see what unites instead of divides.
Anthony Petruzzi, the elected class speaker, used the book “The Hero’s Journey” to describe how everyone is a hero in his or her own right and graduation is the first step, the hero’s “call to adventure.” For example, in Star Wars, this is when the droids come to visit Luke Skywalker.
Heroes are never really alone in the journey and often rely on mentors, such as teachers, to provide advice and help. It is also important to remember that failure is often part of the hero’s journey, which is all right as long as one learns from it.
“I open defeat with open arms in the hopes that it acts as a catalyst for future success, I hope you do the same,” he said.
Petruzzi said making the best of uncertain circumstances is also part of the hero’s journey and that for many, it may never be possible to “go home again” to how it was before the call for adventure. But, armed with the knowledge learned as children and help from others, one can persevere and succeed.
“Thank you very much and may the force be with you always,” Petruzzi said in conclusion.
Medina’s class honored the “Top 10” and “Top 36” students, but did not name a valedictorian or salutatorian.
