Upper Bucks food sampling draws young entrepreneurs
About 300 people came out Oct. 10 to mix, mingle, eat and enjoy handcrafted libations while supporting the next generation of young entrepreneurs.
The 14th annual Upper Bucks Foodie, held at the Sands Chrysler, Jeep Dodge showroom on Route 309 in Richland Township, featured pulled pork and pierogies, chicken tinga cups and butternut squash soup shooters, tasty caulilower crust pizza, pilsner, lager, bourbon and rye and delectable, sweet treats.
The Upper Bucks Chamber of Commerce event brings the community together to sample local fare and support Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week summer camp scholarships to area high school students.
“Foodie continues to be an event that the entire community looks forward to,” said Leanna Knight, Foodie committee chairwoman and vice present of Warren Weiss Agency in Milford Township.
She said the evening provided a chance to try new food and drink “…while enjoying a night out.”
Knight said UBCC members always step up to help put the annual event together. Rale baskets like the event’s first-ever “Year of Beer Basket” – a selection of 365 beers – also helped to raise additional funds for PFEW.
“Year of Beer” was a popular addition to this year’s event, Knight said.
Free Enterprise Week is open to high school sophomores and juniors from across the commonwealth.
Locally, students from Palisades, Pennridge and Quakertown Community school districts are supported by UBCC funding.
Scott Lee, PFEW vice president of marketing in Erie, said camps are week long immersion programs teaching students about the world of modern business.
During camp, students learn first hand from business professionals who volunteer their time and teach about the American private enterprise system.
“Camp provides opportunities to develop leadership, communication, teamwork, and other skills vital to future success,” Lee said.
Summer camp programs are held in July and August on the campuses of Lycoming College and Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport, Lee said.
“This event is not only yummy; it’s rewarding to give back to our future workforce,” said Danielle Bodnar, executive director Upper Bucks Chamber of Commerce.
With the boxes packed away and Sands’ showroom back to displaying the newest car models, there’s always time to begin Foodie planning. Foodie sponsorship opportunities are available ahead of the event, as are table exhibitor spaces.
“I’m looking forward to year 15,” Knight said.
