Village Life TUESDAY Lynn News, April 14, 2009 9Website: www.lynnnews.co.uk
GRIMSTON has grown
enormously in the past
30 years, and this is
reflected in the local
facilities.
Grimston Village Hall,
which is actually in Pott
Row, is booked up regu-
larly and is used by a mul-
titude of organisations. As
well as locals, the hall is
used by people from out-
side the village.
One event coming up at
St Botolph's Church is
Grimston Celebration of
Art 2009, from Tuesday,
April 28, to Saturday, May
2, featuring more than 400
paintings of Norfolk
scenery.
Approaching Grimston
via the rugged terrain of
Roydon Common, you get
the feeling you are head-
ing really deep into the
countryside.
Then you enter this
handsome Norfolk village
and suddenly you are very
much back amid the com-
forts of modern life.
The elegant Congham
Hall country house hotel
and adjoining cricket
ground are also on the
main route into the village
centre.
Roydon and Congham
are both close by Grim-
ston and Pott Row, benefit-
ting from the proximity to
the facilities of the bigger
villages, while enjoying
the advantages of a pretty,
rural setting.
Congham is famed for
its fete and world champi-
onship snail racing, which
this year takes place on
Saturday, July 18.
LOCATED on the old road from Lynn to
Norwich, Gayton is a thriving village with
a wide range of shops and facilities.
It is a relatively spread-out village, with
a mixture of older cottages and more mod-
ern housing.
There is also Gayton Hall, with its
attractive grounds, which are normally
open at least once a year.
The parish church, St. Nicholas, is very
much a focal point of the village, and as
well as regular services, other events are
held there at different times, such as flower
festivals and concerts.
The adjoining hamlet of Gayton Thorpe,
with its beautiful round-towered church,
shares many of the facilities of Gayton,
including the same vicar, school and going
to vote in Gayton.
Gayton has a popular football, cricket
team and Social Club.
NOT ONLY is Pott Row right
next door to Grimston, but it
also shares many facilities
with its large neighbour.
Grimston Village Hall, for
instance, is actually in Pott
Row, and plays a major role
in the social life of both
areas.
There is much more to
Pott Row than you will
notice at first glance. It is
one of those `long' villages
that seems to get bigger and
bigger, the further you
explore.
Indeed, it is well worth
your time, for not only is it a
pretty village, but there are
some long-established spe-
cialist businesses that may
have just the goods or serv-
ices you are looking for.
Pott Row is also home to
the Fourville Players group,
and their productions have
been enjoyed immensely by
local audiences down the
years.
