Views sought on
1 billion roadTHIS is the planned
route for the new
A14 and road chiefs
are keen to know
what people think.
The Road to Hell is due
to be revamped in a
couple of years' time,
with the stretch between
Ellington and Fen Ditton
expanding to three lanes
in each direction.
The Highways Agency
has announced plans for a
series of special exhib-
itions about the scheme,
starting later this month.
The Government has
accepted that the A14
needs to be improved, and
has said it is hoped work
can start in 2010.
Before then, public
consultation has to take
place about the scheme,
which transport experts
believe could cost more
than 1 billion.
A spokeswoman for the
Highways Agency said:
"Following feedback from
public consultations, in
2005, 2006 and 2007, and
the announcement of the
preferred route for the
A14, we have been pro-
gressing design of the
scheme and carrying out
an environmental impact
assessment. We now want
to give people the
opportunity to view our
plans in more detail."
The suggested route
between Fen Drayton and
Fen Ditton will follow the
same line as now, but with
major changes to the
junction with the M11 at
Girton, the scene of
numerous pile-ups.
The western section of
the new road, from Fen
Drayton to Ellington, will
track cross-country south
of Wood Green Animal
Shelter and south of
Offord Hill, taking the
route further away from
Huntingdon. The existing
A14 will become a road for
local traffic, like the A1
towards Peterborough.
The first exhibitions
take place at the Marriott
Hotel on Huntingdon's
Hinchingbrooke Business
Park on Sunday, Novem-
ber 30 between 10am-6pm;
December 1 between
11am-8pm; and December
2 between 11am-8pm.
The exhibition then
switches to Girton Coll-
ege, Cambridge, on
December 7 between
10am-6pm; December 8
between 11am-8pm; and
December 9; between
11am-8pm.

growing delays on the A14, right, will be
hoping the proposed new route, main
