Choosing a pre-school
What you need to know
HOW DO I CHOOSE A NURSERY?
You should visit the place you intend to send
your child to make sure that you are comfortable
with the setting.
DOES MY CHILD HAVE TO ATTEND NURSERY
EDUCATION?
Your child does not have to attend nursery
education. The decision is yours until the term
after their fifth birthday.
HOW DO I APPLY?
If you are applying to a local education author-
ity nursery class or school, ring the school places
team for an application form and information
sheet.
If you are applying to any other type of nurs-
ery provider you need to ask for an application
form.
WHAT ARE THE ELIGIBILITY DATES FOR A
NURSERY EDUCATION GRANT?
Each child is entitled to receive up to six terms
of free nursery education before they reach
statutory school age (the term after their fifth
birthday).
Children become eligible at the start of the
term following their third birthday.
WHAT IF YOUR CHILD IS UPSET WHEN YOU
LEAVE THEM AT NURSERY OR PRE-SCHOOL?
Your child may need some reassurance when
they start nursery or pre-school. You should talk
through everything that is going to happen and
let them know what time you are going to pick
them up. All children go through the stage of
being clingy and upset and it may be that you
just need to give your child time to settle and
feel confident in their new surroundings.
`Taking time to make
right decision crucial'
CASE STUDY: James and mum
Alyson Delin, from Denton
Holme, Carlisle
JAMES has just turned three and
will start at pre-school after Easter.
Mum Alyson feels that choosing a
pre-school setting that is close to
their home is important and one
that he is familiar with.
"Reputation is important," she
said. "If you know someone who
has had a child at a particular pre-
school and they recommend it then
that is a good indication.
"I think it is good for children to
mix with other children and it is
important for them to get used to
being away from their parents so
taking time to decide is crucial."

`Ryan's happy, so no
point in moving him'
CASE STUDY: Ryan
Litt and mum
Nichola Johnston,
from Morton,
Carlisle
RYAN was already
attending a nursery
that has a pre-school
provision so Nichola
decided that it was
best to keep Ryan in
the same setting.
Ryan turned three
in December and
started at pre-school
in January.
Nicola said: "He
was happy at
Stepping Stones
Nursery so I didn't
think that there was
any point in moving
him.
"He has been going
to the nursery since
he was nine months
and so we know the
set up."
