NIGHTLIFENiteZone
WE all spend days, weeks and even
months planning a big night out in
the city centre of Glasgow but most
revellers give little or no thought to
how they are going to get home.
That's where Nite Zone comes in.
Initially introduced to city streets in 2005
as a three-week pilot scheme, Nite Zone
has helped hundreds of thousands of
party-goers arrive safely home every
weekend after a night on the town and
it's now regarded as a success story.
Last year (between April 2008 to March
2009) 700,000 people passed through
Nite Zone, which is an average of 13,500
people each weekend.
Run in partnership with Glasgow City
Council, First Group and Strathclyde Police,
Nite Zone has not only helped nights out
end happily and safely, it has also been
responsible for dramatically reducing
crime, antisocial behaviour, and litter in
the city.
According to police statistics, it has
contributed to a reduction in the number
of incidents of violent crime in the city
centre's taxi ranks by 31 per cent over the
past five years.
Willie Caie, manager from Glasgow
Community and Safety Services, who has
a responsibility for the city centre, said:
City takes initiative
for a safe night out
