The greatest race meeting in the worldROYAL ASCOTALTHOUGHROYALASCOTis undoubtedly the
highlight of the flat season, not only in the UK but
across the entire world, the quality of the racing
doesn8217t diminish once the Royal Meeting has ended.
The feature race meeting the month following
Royal Ascot is King George Day on Saturday July 26.
The key race of the day is The King George VI and
Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Europe8217s mid-season middle-
distance championship and globally one of the sport8217s
most coveted prizes. With 163750,000 on offer, 8216the
King George8217 is Ascot8217s most valuable race of the year.
The supporting card is second to none with the
163150,000 totesport International Handicap, the big
betting race of the day, and the Group Three Princess
Margaret Independent Newspaper Stakes 8211a traditional
pointer towards the following season8217s 1,000 Guineas.
The King George8217s roll of honour reads like a
8216Who8217s Who8217 of horseracing, boasting many illustrious
names from turf history such as Nijinsky, Mill Reef,
Brigadier Gerard, Shergar and Dancing Brave.
The 2007 race went to Dylan Thomas, who had
been beaten the month before at Royal Ascot by French
sensation Manduro in The Prince of Wales8217s Stakes.
Dylan Thomas went on to prove his worth,
winning the Prix de l8217Arc de Triomphe in early
October, once again beating Youmzain who had
finished second to the O8217Brien-trained horse in
The King George. Voted Horse of the Year in 2007,When Royal Ascot week finishes, where do discerning racegoers
look to for their next fix of world-class racing and sartorial glamour? Dylan Thomas won 10 of his 18 races that year
and Ascot Racecourse had the pleasure of
witnessing one of his most scintillating victories.
The stage is now set for this year8217s race, with
another showdown between Europe8217s leading
mile and a half horses eagerly anticipated, while
a top-class challenge from Japan is also a possibility.
