Brow rewarded
for Challenge
Cup exploits
WATH Brow Hornets were
rewarded for their stunning
Challenge Cup run earlier
this year by being named the
inaugural winners of the
RFL Challenge Cup Commu-
nity Club of the Year award
which was presented at the
recent Challenge Cup final at
Wembley.
Earlier this year the
Cleator Moor-based outfit
reached the fourth round of
the competition, beating
Egremont Rangers in the
first round 42-0 before dispo-
sing of Hull Dockers in
round two 40-22.
In the third round, Wath
Brow produced the shock of
the round by beating Co-op-
erative Championship One
side London Skolars 14-12.
The fourth round saw
Wath Brow up against Na-
tional Conference division
one team Featherstone
Rovers and were on the
wrong end of a 54-16 result at
the Chris Moyles Stadium.
Neil Wood, the RFL's na-
tional business development
manager, said: "Wath Brow
have been one of the great
stories this year in the
Carnegie Challenge Cup."

Baggies boss
backs Moor
keeper Carson
WEST Brom boss Roberto Di
Matteo has backed former
Cleator Moor Celtic shot-
stopper Scott Carson to stake
a shock claim to be in Eng-
land's World Cup squad.
The 24-year-old goal-
keeper, who was recently ap-
pointed captain at the
Hawthorns, has started the
season in fine form.
Carson pledged his future
to West Brom despite his
fears he will receive the cold
shoulder from Fabio Capello
following The Baggies' rel-
egation to the Champi-
onship.
He was snubbed for the
recent World Cup qualifier
against Croatia, and has
fallen down the pecking or-
der behind David James,
Robert Green and Ben Foster
in the race to be England's
No1 at next summer's fi-
nals.
But Di Matteo has told
Carson, who hails from
Cleator Moor, not to discount
the possibility of being on
the plane to South Africa and
adding to his collection of
three caps.
Even though it is unlikely
Capello will look outside the
Premier League as he assem-
bles his final World Cup
squad, Di Matteo believes
Carson can put himself back
on radar as his fellow Italian
is known to go on form
rather than reputation. He
said: "If Scott does well this
season, by the end, when
they choose the squad, he
might have the chance to get
in.
"He is out of the limelight
but if we have a good season,
and he had a good season, he
has the experience and he
has played for England be-
fore, which would be impor-
tant."
Di Matteo believes his de-
cision to make Carson cap-
tain following the departure
of former skipper Jonathan
Greening has been vindi-
cated, as the role is bringing
out the best in the former
Liverpool keeper, who joined
West Brom in a 3.25million
deal in 2008.
The Baggies boss added:
"It was an easy decision to
make with Scott Carson.
"He's a great player and
has respect from other team
members. He has a lot of
experience, despite his age,
and he deserves to be cap-
tain.
"He plays at a high level
every week."

Archer Wills beats double Olympic
medallist on way to last sixteen
ALAN Wills beat double
Olympic medallist and
Great Britain team-mate
Simon Terry on his way to
the last 16 of the world
championships in Korea
recently.
The Frizington archer, a
bronze medallist two years
ago at the Leipzig world
championships, was GB's
best male performer in the
competition.
After shooting his weak-
est round of the tourna-
ment, he eventually lost to
Wenyuan Chen, of China,
who himself then fell to the
top seeded Korean, Jin
Hyek Oh, in the quarter-
finals.
"He was beaten 103 to 97
by the Chinese archer, after
earlier shooting 109, 104 and
105," said Wills' mentor Alf
Davies, of Sellafield
Archery Club.
"He must have had one
bad arrow, which he won't
be happy with. But he's
pretty resilient and will
take it on the chin.
"An American who does
the commentaries has given
them all nick-names and he
calls Alan `dangerous'.
"That's because he
doesn't qualify tremen-
dously well, but when he
then goes in to the head-to-
heads, he really gets up for
it."
Wills beat Terry, who won
two bronze medals in the
Barcelona Olympics, in
round three. He also dis-
posed of his team-mate in
the last world champi-
onships, in the bronze
medal match.
The Sellafield ace was
crowned British National
champ for the first time ear-
lier this year.
He held off a rally from
British No 1 Terry to claim
the title with the final
arrow of the tournament, at
Lilleshall.
