Carpentry and Electricity Students Participate in Community Projects
Year after year, Moraine Park carpentry and electricity students gain hands-on experience in their
respective trades while simultaneously giving back to the community. During 2009, students in the
College's ABC Carpentry Apprenticeship program helped construct a playground and picnic area at
Fireman's Park in Campbellsport, Wisconsin. Meanwhile, Electricity program students volunteered to
install dozens of electrical outlets, light switches and fixtures in the 2009 Vision House a home built
for a first-generation immigrant family from the Republic of Kosovo.
As part of the process, the students gained real-life trade experience while the community gained
carpentry and electrical help on major projects that ultimately impacted many.
The Campbellsport park addition demanded considerable support from community members,
including the Campbellsport Area Chamber of Commerce and Volunteer Fire Department, and
numerous fundraisers sponsored by a variety of organizations. Among those to roll up their
sleeves were Moraine Park carpentry students and instructor Gary Roehrig, who practiced
a wide variety of construction skills in a climate where teamwork was critical. During
the project, the students also reinforced the development of soft skills such as
critical thinking and leadership, according to Jon Waldhuetter, dean of
apprenticeship. "The community represents a trades-
person's workshop," he said. "This is where they
hone their skills,
