CGH doctor all revved up about keeping kids healthy
BY KELLY McGEE-ALLEN
SPECIAL TO TODAY'S MAN
STERLING Combining a love
of racing with his love of com-
munity was something Dr. Eric
Kuhns has envisioned since he
became a member of the CGH
Health Foundation Board of
Trustees.
Now his dream is coming to
fruition with the foundation's
Fit is Fast campaign.
A race enthusiast for the past
15 years, Kuhns, a family prac-
titioner at the CGH Family Prac-
tice Center, 3010 E. Lynn Blvd.,
also is a member of the National
Auto Sports Association.
He races a 1988 Porsche 944.
These days, he's using his hobby to
draw attention to the evils of a seden-
tary lifestyle, which leads to obesity
in children and adults.
"Never underestimate the impor-
tance of fitness," Kuhns said in June
CGH Medical Center newsletter,
which featured a photo of him and
his car on the cover.
"When your performance starts
to drop off halfway through a race, a
baseball game, or even work, you find
youcan'tfocusanymoreandyouwon't
be able to truly `outrace' the competi-
tion. Being physically fit plays a very
critical role in your ability to perform
consistently on the track, on the field
and in your everyday life."
Kuhns noted a wreck he was in on
the race track earlier this year. His car
ended up on its roof, and he walked
away without a scratch or
even a sore muscle, in part
because he keeps himself in
good physical shape, he said.
"I'm a doctor, first, and I see
more and more patients com-
ing in being diagnosed with
diabetes and other types of
long-term diseases due to the
types of lifestyles they lead,"
he told Today's Man. "If they
would just make some simple
lifestyle changes, they would
become healthier.
"Being active is important,
and the earlier you start, the
easier it is to do. Take NA-
SCAR drivers for instance: It has been
proven that the ones who are in bet-
ter shape, and work with trainers
and such, do better because they are
able to withstand the G-forces being
thrown around and have better eye/
hand coordination to race well."
"My goal is to make the connection
between the importance of eating
right and exercising with your abil-
ity to successfully compete in a sport
and to live a healthy life," he said.
Tractor pedal contests are a good way for kids to get a little
exercise on the track.
