Where:
La Gabbia lies at the entrance
to the OuseburnValley, just two
minutes' walk from the Biscuit
Factory art gallery and some five
minutes fromThe Cluny, Seven
Stories and other attractions of the
regenerated urban valley.
Taking the ground floor of a
formerWoodTurning workshop, the
award-winning conversion has
created a unique restaurant on two
levels. You enter at street level into the
bar, reception area and a smaller
seating area for around 30 divers, or
go up into the newly built main
restaurant holding a further 60
covers and the open-plan kitchen
area.
This split-level arrangement gives
the restaurant the flexibility to hold a
multitude of diverse events in
addition to their normal restaurant
trade.They range from charity
evenings for groups such as the
Evening Chronicle Sunshine Fund to
fundraising nights and networking
lunches.
The great aspect of the location,
however, is free on-street parking.
Lunchtime at Boyd Street is busy
with parking for local business, but
come 5pm, the streets empty leaving
plenty of space.
Style:
Informal, definitely.The
restaurant is perfect for groups
getting together for a good time.
What sets La Gabbia apart from
Newcastle's other Italian restaurants
is that it has no alcohol licence,
allowing visitors to bring their own
drinks at a fraction of the cost.
You can have a great evening out
without breaking the bank.
Food:
Head chef Franco Pizzuti is one
of the region's most renowned Italian
chefs, famed for producing authentic
Italian cuisine from locally sourced
produce.The meals reflect his
reputation ranging from simple pasta
dishes with a twist to fabulous meat
and fish dishes.
Drinks:
BYO! Being able to BringYour
Own alcohol is a fantastic asset to the
restaurant, given the mark-up many
establishments put on wine and
spirits. The money you spend at La
Gabbia goes on your food you
decide what you want spend on your
drink, but whether it's the finest wine
and champagne or cans of lager and
cider, you get a friendly reception
from Manager SimonTaylor and his
staff who will chill your bottles or
open them to let them breathe.
The crowd:
It's an eclectic mix of the Italian
community, students, professionals
and family groups who all come for
the food and value for money the
restaurant offers the lunchtime
special at just 6.95 can't be beaten!
Don't miss:
The opportunity to drink your
own wine and lunchtime and early
Evening specials a two-course meal
starts from 6.95. Alternatively, the
`specials' blackboard changes every
day depending on the availability of
fresh produce the fish dishes are
spectacular.
