Doncaster Council's
former strategic direc-
tor of organisational
development and cul-
ture, appointed as
managing director in
February 2008 after
18 months as interim
MD. Originally from
Brighton, his local
government career
spans 35 years and
includes posts in his
home city, London
and Carlisle. His job
title changed in June
but his responsibilities remain the same. The
authority has a workforce of around 15,000 and a
budget of �847m.
Role: Chairman of Doncaster Children's
Services Improvement Board
Appointed in March this year after a Government
review into `serious weaknesses' in Doncaster's
Children's Services and with a remit to monitor
delivery of an urgent improvement plan, scrutinise
performance and challenge progress. He is a qual-
ified social worker and former chief executive of
Kirklees Council - during which time the authority
was rated as `excellent' by the Audit Commission.
Seconded to the Department of Health in 2002 to
tackle health inequalities and left Kirklees in 2004
to further his government advisory role and to
work with local authorities to improve their per-
formance.

Roles: Elected Mayor of Doncaster and cab-
inet
Peter Davies is one of 12 elected mayors in the
country and Doncaster Council's only English
Democrat member. The former school teacher
won this year's election with 25,344 votes. He is
the authority's political leader, responsible for
major policy and budgetary decisions and the
delivery of most council services. He has exec-
utive powers which he can delegate to his six
appointed cabinet colleagues. Patricia
Schofield serves as his deputy and each cabinet
member has a specific portfolio responsibility.
These include adult services, children's servic-
es, neighbourhoods and housing, waste and
recycling, transport and roads and business and
development.
Cynthia Ransome
The Conservative
Sprotbrough ward coun-
cillor was elected in
2004. She previously set
up and ran Poppies
florists in Woodlands and
her family owns Marr
Grange Pork Supplies.
She has a background in
private healthcare and
her previous posts
include business devel-
opment manager for
Woodlands Healthcare in
Darlington and Park Hill
Hospital, Doncaster. She
now deals with wide-ranging issues from envi-
ronmental health and food hygiene to affordable
housing and welfare rights as cabinet member
for neighbourhoods, regulatory/customer serv-
ices and housing.
Patricia Schofield
A former teacher at St
Mary's School in
Doncaster and a mem-
ber of Blaxton Parish
Council for 47 years,
Mrs Schofield has repre-
sented the Finningley
ward since 2003. She
was Doncaster Coun-
cil's Conservative group
leader in 2008/9 and
was appointed deputy
mayor in June with addi-
tional responsibility for adult services.
Andrea Milner
A member of the Transport and General Workers
Union for 28 years, she
was elected as a
Labour councillor for
Rossington in 2007
and served in the cabi-
net of former mayor
Martin Winter. She had
a lengthy career in the
glass industry and runs
a landscape gardening
business. Now an
Independent member
with responsibility for
children's services,
equality and diversity, she works closely with
the Government-appointed team charged with
improving the service.
Mark Thompson
His varied career
includes freelance pho-
tography, civil engi-
neering and kitchen
installation and design.
He stood in his first
Doncaster Council
election in 2007 and
was defeated by just
seven votes. He was
elected to represent the
Balby ward the follow-
ing year and was a
member of the Alliance of Independent
Members Group until taking up his cabinet posi-
tion in June. He has portfolio responsibility for
the environment and sustainability, waste dis-
posal and recycling.
Richard Walker
Elected to
Thorne-Moorends
Town Council in
2003 and became
an Independent
councillor for
Thorne the follow-
ing year. He is a
former mayor of
Thorne and has
been a funeral
director in
Doncaster for
more than 30
years. His early
career was in the
leisure, theatre and entertainment industries.
Previously in the Alliance of Independent
Members Group, he has portfolio responsibility
for drainage, transport and roads and gave up
the post of deputy civic mayor to join the cabi-
net.
Jonathan Wood
He has been a
Sprotbrough ward
councillor since
2008 and was the
Conservative can-
didate in this year's
mayoral election.
He is a trained
accountant and for-
mer employee of
PKF Accountants in
Sheffield and
worked for
Yorkshire Forward
for five years. Until
2006 he was vice consul at the British-
Consulate General in Chicago and represented
the UK to secure trade and inward investment.
He is now cabinet member for business, devel-
opment, planning, regeneration and new enter-
prise.
