pushing and was joined by Lammers. The
Topkart driver seemed to be the fastest of the
three, but the Intrepid pairing of Cozzaglio
and Toninelli also started to close in.
Lammers kept having a look up the inside
of Manetti, but defending against him let
Thonon pull away. He slipped by at the hairpin
but Manetti fought on. Thonon continued to
pull away and Cozzaglio and Toninelli caught
him up.
By now the race was at half distance and
Manetti still hadn't let up on Lammers. Five
laps later Manetti was stationary in the gravel
after Lammers had cut off an overtaking
move, but the Dutchman was undisturbed
and was left with a cushion ahead of Toninelli,
gearbox debutant Norman Nato (F, Intrepid/
TM) and Cozzaglio.
Another poor start for Thonon in Final 2
saw him drop back to 8th and Lammers take
the lead ahead of Thomas Mich (F, Birel/TM)
and Nato. As expected though, the Belgian
quickly recovered and moved back to 6th
at the first corner a lap later. Renaudie and
Nato then fought for 3rd, with Nato taking
back the position from Renaudie at the back
of the circuit, leaving Mich to catch up with
Lammers. His kart
started to go off
though, allowing
Lammers to pull
away again and
causing the rest of
the field to bunch
up behind him.
Thonon got
stuck in with the
group fighting for
4th, overcoming
Cozzaglio again
at the last corner.
Lammers was off
into the distance
but Thonon took
Nato and Mich on
successive laps,
although it took a slight nudge for Mich
to give way. But to prove he was the faster
runner, Thonon soon pulled out 1.7s on him.
He continued to post fastest laps but by now
didn'thaveenoughtimetochallengeLammers
and took the flag half a second behind.
Behind them, Mich headed a long train of
karts in the later laps, including Alessandro
Piccini (I, Maranello/TM) and Gary Carlton
(USA, CRG/Maxter). Despite his initial
early form, Nato was taken by his team-mate
Cozzaglio.
KZ2
Tony Lavanant (F, Energy/TM) was fastest
in qualifying followed by Joffrey Demanse (F,
PCR/TM) and Jack Hawksworth (Gillard/
TM), but after the heats these positions
were reversed with five heat wins going to
Hawksworth, four to Lavanant, and two to
Demanse. However, Demanse was the only
one to look like a challenge to Hawksworth
when they came up against each other in the
heats after Demanse pushed Hawksworth
hard to a win by 0.06s. Emanuele Neri (I,
CKR/TM), Kevin Jansen (NL, Energy/TM)
and Mathias Gallepe (F, Energy/TM) also
won heats.
Hawksworth came off the line too fast
in Final 1, virtually assuring that he would
receive a penalty at some point in the race. "I
was anticipating the delay between the light
going out and the green light coming on but
this time it was longer so I went too early. I
tried to stop but it didn't work" said the 2006
European Junior Max Champion.
So as Hawksworth pulled out a lead, the
10s penalty board was put out for him, with
the handicap showing up immediately on the
timing boards dropping him back to 17th.
Lavanant was also fast and closing, while
Neri was already 2s back from him. Demanse,
one of the only drivers to look as strong as
Hawksworth in the heats, lost two places
when passed by Jansen and Neri, but fought
back and by lap five he was heading a group
of six karts including those two.
A couple of laps later Demanse started
to close back up on Lavanant once he knew
Hawksworth was out of the picture and he
had a chance to take the lead. Neri had got the
better of Jansen by half distance but Demanse
seemed to be unable to get anywhere with
Lavanant until the last few laps. He had a look
up the inside at each corner for three whole
laps, but his compatriot was half a step ahead
of him each time.
Hawksworth hadn't let up throughout the
race so as to maximise his grid position for
Race 2, so finished ahead on the track by the
length of the straight and 7th on the screens.
In Final 2 Lavanant held onto the lead while
Hawksworth fell back a place to 8th. Demanse
kept behind Lavanant as the top three, also
including Jansen, pulled away. Hawksworth
started to recover from his start, passing two
rivals on the inside of the second corner and
