A
rtist Judy Logan will be putting on
an exhibition of her striking prints
and paintings at Cambridge
ArtWorks in November. Inspired by
emotions and events from every day life,
her work is bold yet thoughtful, with a
hint of Picasso about it.
"My work is very varied and eclectic,"
says Judy. "I respond to my emotional state
and whatever experiences I've come
across comes out on my work. That's what
I like about Picasso when he's been
moved or inspired, although you recognise
it's his work, you can clearly see that he is
following his own artistic interpretation,
rather than a set `style'."
Having always harboured a passion for art,
it wasn't until recently that Judy began to
work as an artist professionally.
"At school, all I ever wanted to do was
draw. It's something that runs within me
and always has. However I got drawn
away from what I wanted to do and
worked in commerce, then in the film
industry. Then, about 10 years ago, a
friend of mine said: `come on, lets go and
do an Art A-Level.' She stayed for about
three weeks but I continued and I just got
the bug again. The art teacher was really
inspirational and told me I should stick
at it, so I decided I'd really commit
myself to my art."
Judy followed this by taking an MA in
Printmaking at Anglia Ruskin, which she
completed last year. "Now I have my own
studio at ArtWorks and things have started
happening for me," she enthuses. And
they certainly have. Just this year, Judy has
exhibited at the A & D Gallery in London,
and she was invited to hold an exhibition
at the Fry Art Gallery in Saffron Walden.
"It's been a very good year. I feel really,
really encouraged."
Judy also has the enviable claim to fame
of having painted alongside Rolf Harris.
"In 2004 I got the opportunity to be one of
the painters on Rolf on Art. That was
extremely exciting. We were working on
Holbein's Henry VIII, and each of us was
given a canvas and a piece of the painting.
At the end they put all the canvases
together to make up the full picture.
"Rolf himself was just lovely. He's got so
much energy, even off camera. He took
time out for everybody."
Born in Leigh-on-Sea in Essex, Judy
has lived in Cambridge with husband,
Stephen, for the past 15 years.
"Cambridge has certainly given me an
opportunity to do what I want to do
creatively, and I'm very grateful for that.
There are times when you have a decision
to make," Judy reflects. "I'm very much:
`yes I can, let's do this'. And from that,
things can happen."
