The research revealed the lack of national statistics on
the amount of land occupied by the diverse logistics
activities. It also demonstrated the need for joined up
thinking by those responsible for transport policy and
land use policy.
LRN Annual Awards
Another LRN tradition is the presentation of a number
of Awards during the conference.
Dissertation Awards
The student awards are presented at the Conference
Dinner. This year it was held in the splendid Cardiff
City Hall in the presence of the Deputy Mayor and
Mayoress of Cardiff.
The Undergraduate Dissertation of the Year Award
was presented to Nabil Ahmed, University of
Manchester Business School, for: Infrastructural
limitations and the impact of terrorism on supply chain
risk management in Pakistan.
The Masters Dissertation of the Year Award was
presented to Verena Flitsch, University of Plymouth, for:
Collaboration in the German food and beverage
industry � extended supplier networks.
The PhD Award, the James Cooper Memorial Cup
was presented to Dr Yingli Wang, Cardiff Business
School, for: Electronic market places for tailored logistics.
Professor Mohamed Naim collected the Award, on
behalf of Yingli who was on maternity leave.
Freight Best Practice Student Award
Now in its second year the Freight Best Practice Award
is an integral part of the LRN Awards. Geoff Clarke,
Associate Director AECOM on behalf of Freight Best
Practice presented the trophy to Dean Bernard an MSc
student art Birmingham City University for his essay,The
Carbon Challenge � what measures should the logistics
industry be taking to reduce its carbon footprint.
IJoL Best Paper Award
The International Journal of Logistics Research and
Applications (IJoL) is the journal of the LRN. The 2008
best paper, selected by the Editorial Advisory Board was
announced by Professor Michael Browne, chairman of
the LRN at the close of conference. It was presented to
J Lynch, Harrow Business School and Linda Whicker,
Nottingham University Business School for their paper,
Do logistics and marketing understand each other? An
empirical investigation of the interface activities between
logistics and marketing. IJoL vol. 11, no 3, June 2008.
Best Conference Paper and Best Conference Poster
Paper Awards
The best conference paper was presented by the lead
editor of the conference proceedings, Andrew Potter
(Cardiff Business School), to Maria Triantafyllou and Tom
Cherrett (University of Southampton) for their paper,
The logistics of managing hazardous waste � a case study
analysis in the retail sector.
The inaugural presentation of this award was made
by Barry Evans, (Cardiff Business School) to Serder
Tasan and Okan Tuna (Dokuz Eylul University, Turkey)
for their paper, Deciding logistics locations centres in
supply chains considering both quantitative and
qualitative factors.
This year's Best Paper Winners were (from left) Tom Cherrett CMILT

their awards from Andrew Potter MILT, University of Cardiff (right).

Leeds in 2010
The 15th LRN Conference will be organised by Leeds University and held in the city from 8th � 10th September
2010. The PhD Workshop will take place on Wednesday 8th September. The Conference theme will be:Towards
the Sustainable Supply Chain: Balancing the Needs of Business, Economy and the Environment. Dr Tony Whiteing,
who will be chairing the conference, emphasised that the programme will, as usual, include papers ranging over the
breadth of supply chain and logistics research.
