WISBECH is set to become an attractive destina-
tion for the yachting and boating fraternity with
the expansion of the leisure marine facilities on
the River Nene that wends its way through the
town towards The Wash.
Eleven miles inland, Wisbech is the perfect
base for yacht-lovers looking to explore the town
and the Fen countryside around it.
Facilities on the river include 128 new pon-
toons for berthing, a wet dock and a boat lift.
The handsome Georgian Brinks either side of
the river already welcome visitors to Wisbech
with some magnificent buildings, enticing them
to explore even further.
The elegant Crescent, also Georgian, encircles
Wisbech Castle, a Regency villa built on the site
of the original Norman Castle. Wisbech Castle is
open to the public on occasional summer after-
noons and for special events.
Wisbech and Fenland Museum has treasures
of national importance, such as the manuscript
of Charles Dickens' Great Expectations, and
Napoleon's breakfast service, captured on the
battlefields at Waterloo.
THE Norman church of St Peter and St Paul is
the setting for the annual Wisbech Rose Fair, one
of the finest flower festivals in England, which will
be held from Wednesday, July 1, to Saturday,
July 4.
The centrepiece of rose fair is the superb dis-
plays of traditional British flowers brought togeth-
er with exotic blooms flown in especially for the
festival. The theme for 2009 is Time and Tide.
Rose Fair began more than 40 years ago when
rose buds picked locally were sold in the church
gardens to raise funds for the restoration of the
church. There are still roses to be seen growing
in the fields around the town.
The church is open until 8pm most evenings
during the festival. There are also floral displays
in all the other town centre churches, each of
which has its own character.
St Peter and St Paul's is set in attractive
BASED in the Fens in the vil-
lage of Fridaybridge (off the

March), the Flint's family farm

tional environment where
everyone can have a great
time!

tion with many fascinating
hands-on seasonal activities,

areas, including a play barn
with a drop slide and astra
slide and padded play area.
Woodhouse Farm Park
also has pony rides in fine
weather and if your child is
pony mad, there are pony
experience days at very rea-
sonable rates. They offer
children's party facilities and
activities and will stay open
for after-school parties.

little farmer breakfast for
your child, or have lunch or
afternoon tea in the restau-
rant, and then visit the well-
stocked gift and craft shop.

FLOWER festivals have become a big part of
church life and fund-raising over the years,
but Walpole St Peter's Church Flower Festival
can lay claim to being one of the first in the
country, and few others can match the many
thousands of visitors it attracts year after
year.
Over the five days of the festival, between
10-15,000 people are expected to visit the
quiet Marshland village, between Wisbech and
King's Lynn.
Certainly, it is believed to be the longest-
running continuous church flower festival in
England.
This year's event, the 47th, runs from
Saturday, May 30, to Wednesday, June 3. Car
parking and entrance are free, catering for
parties by arrangement.
With its magnificent raised altar and cathe-
dral-like dimensions, St Peter's makes a
superb setting for the many floral displays.
On Sunday, May 31, there is a Festival
Eucharist (preacher, the Bishop of Ely) at
11am, King's Lynn Town Band will play from
2pm for two hours, and Songs of Praise is at
6pm.
