UST because it's the summer
holidays, it doesn't mean
everyone is going away.
Certainly, there are still some
big names due to appear at
theatres up and down the county
and slightly farther afield but
no where more so than in
Southend.
The stars come to the seaside in
July with a concert by Hayley
Westenra on July 24 at the Cliffs
Pavilion, followed the very next
night by a man who perhaps can
be rightly regarded as the hardest
working comedian in the world,
Ken Dodd, whose shows are
legendary for their longevity.
Next up in August will be firm
Southend favourite, Joe Pasquale
on August 15, and rounding off the
summer months will be legendary
singer Englebert Humperdinck on
September 6, and Welsh funnyman
Rob Brydon on September 20, all
at the Cliffs.
In Chelmsford, at the Civic
Theatre, there's more musical
nostalgia in the form of the
Searchers on July 15, and then on
July 17, one of the country's most
spectacular choral ensembles, the
London Community Gospel Choir,
take their turn on stage.
The choir's concert will be a
special fundraising event for
charity, Cherish Uganda, raising
money for children with HIV/AIDS
in the African country.
At the Mercury Theatre in
Colchester rounding off their
spring and summer season will be
actresses Lisa Faulkner and Helen
Fraser in Gertrude's Secret on
July 6. Paul Jones and Digby
Fairweather play a gig on July 10,
and a cast that includes The Bill's
DCI Frank Burnside, actor
Christopher Ellison, comes
together for Write Me A Murder,
Our pick of the best shows for the coming season...
