Cards win LHC title, not happy with performance
PELLA -- The Newton girls
bowling team won their sev-
enth tournament of the season
Saturday to remain undefeat-
ed. The Cards also clinched
their fourth consecutive Little
Hawkeye Conference title. But
no one was celebrating after
the win.
Newton rolled its season-
worst total of 2,363, and
although it was enough to beat
Knoxville by nearly 300 pins,
it was a somber tone as the
Cardinals left Pella's Excite-a-
Bowl.
The slick oil condition on
the lanes didn't favor the Car-
dinals' game. Senior Brandi
Collins, however, recovered
from an off week last week at
Knoxville to roll games of 188
and 200. It was her second-
best individual score of the
season, as won the girls top
individual singles honor.
"This oil pattern was longer
than anything we have bowled
on this season," Newton coach
Seth Banwell said. "It really
f a v o r e d
B r a n d i ' s
game since
she throws
it slower
a n d h a s
more revo-
lutionsthan
the other
girls. It was
good to see
her bounce
back after struggling last week.
But the rest of the girls strug-
gled on these lanes, and they
were difficult for sure."
It was a day where all the
teams struggled, other than
the home Pella Christian boys
who rolled their season-best
score of the season, led by
Tyler Vermeer. Vermeer rolled
games of 253 and 191 to win
the boys singles event.
But the Knoxville and Nor-
walk boys teams struggled as
they also rolled one of their
worst totals of the season.
The lane conditions were very
demanding.
Newton also was short one
player as their second-best
bowler in practice scoring

injury.
B a r e
also sat out
of practice
last week.
"Shelby
has a pulled tendon in her
thumb," Banwell said. "Some
of the injury is due to bowling,
but she had an incident out-
side of bowling that added to
it and did most of the damage.
Her thumb is in a splint, and
we'll just have to see how her
thumb looks next week. But
the main thing is to get her
healthy for district."
The Newton JV girls bowled
in their final tournament of
the season and also won with
a team total of 1,707 The team
was led by Hannah Owens
with a 233 two-game total.
"Our JV girls have improved
a lot this year," assistant coach
P.J. Quinn said. "Hannah has
never bowled in a league, only
in the high school program,
and she proves the program
is working with all of our kids
and that we're teaching good
fundamentals.
"Lexi Morgan has improved
by leaps and bounds the last
couple of weeks, only averag-
ing in the low 100s until sud-
denly rolling games in the 170s
in practice."
Newton has one more tour-
nament at Adel on Saturday
before its district tournament
at Knoxville in two weeks. The
state meet is at Plaza Lanes in
Des Moines later this month.

Jill George crashes in first run at Daytona
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.
-- Newton native Jill George
competed at Daytona Inter-
national Speedway on Sat-
urday in the ARCA Slick Mist
200.
Twenty-five laps into the
80-lap race she overreacted
to a crash in front of her, got
her left wheels on the apron
in turn four and turned her
car into the outside wall and
upside down. She walked
away from the crash and
checked out of the infield
care center.
George was driving the
James Hylton Racing No. 48
Dodge. She earned a seat
in the car after a successful
test Dec. 19 at Daytona in a
Andy Hillenburg Fast Track
Racing team car.
"Testing and timing at
Daytona was an awesome
experience," George said.
"I was very pleased with
my performance. I know
now that I can do this kind
of racing and that I can be
competitive. I have so much
to learn, but I feel that I have
the skills to be competitive
with the best in this series
and that I could be the best
female racer out there, in
time.
" M y g o a l h a s n o t
changed. I want to race at
the highest possible level,
with the Nationwide Series
as my first goal. If that can't
happen, then I will do the
best I can to race my dirt
cars while we seek enough
sponsorship to compete
nationally. I know I need
to continue working and
improving, and I am dedi-
cated to that."

Latest storm postpones
area events across Iowa
Monday's all-day snowstorm wreaked
havoc on Jasper County schools and athletic
events scheduled for last night.
Schools let out early to get kids home safe,
which in turn canceled basketball games and
all practices scheduled for Monday evening.
The Newton boys
were scheduled to host
Chariton, but the game
was postponed. Newton
coach Tom Vanderlaan
said Monday afternoon
that he wants to try to
make it up but nothing
had been finalized by
press time.
The PCM girls were
scheduled to travel to Gil-
bert on Monday, but that
game has been postponed to Thursday.
The girls will play a varsity game at 6 p.m.
followed by a regular scheduled boys var-
sity game. Also, the boys junior varsity game
scheduled for Thursday has been canceled.
The Lynnville-Sully boys basketball team
was scheduled to face BGM on Monday but
will now play Wednesday, beginning with a
JV game at 6 p.m.
The snowfall continued over night Mon-
day and all five Jasper County schools have
been closed for the day.
That means Newton's boys varsity basket-
ball game against Boone will not take place.
There has been no make-up date scheduled.
There are other games in the area sched-
uled for tonight, but they will most likely be
postponed or canceled.

CMB girls struggle with
shot against Defenders
BAXTER -- A tough shooting night from
the floor and from the line didn't help the
Collins-Maxwell-Baxter's chances at a vic-
tory Saturday night.
Neither did the 35-26 disadvantage on
the glass, 21 turnovers or a 21-9 deficit in the
second quarter.
Add all of that up and
the Raiders dropped a
57-32 decision to the
Defenders in Baxter.
CMB shot 27 percent
from the field and made
just 46 percent of its shots
from the foul line.
After leading by one
point after one quarter,
the Raiders got outscored
48-22 the rest of the way.
Junior Amber Joyce led
the team with 11 points
and six rebounds, while
sophomore Emmeline
Huffaker added four
points, four rebounds and
two steals.
Junior Zeah Peterson
turned in four points and
four boards, senior Ash-
ley Fricke pulled down
five rebounds and senior
Abby Maher added four points, three caroms
and two steals.
CMB was scheduled to host South Ham-
ilton tonight, but the game was postponed
due to wintry weather.
