Giving a secure home to kids in need since 1913
Mooseheart Child City & School has provided a home and education to nearly
12,000 children and teens on its 1,000-acre campus south of Batavia since its
founding in July 1913. The campus also contains the headquarters for Moose
International, a 1.2-million-member organization conducting more than $75 million
in community service annually throughout the U.S., Canada, Great Britain and
Bermudain addition to its support of Mooseheart, and Moosehaven, a retirement
community in Florida.
Mooseheart is home for 200 to 250 children and teens who are sponsored by
one of more than 1,700 Moose Centers. Children come here because, for whatever
reason, their parents or guardians cannot provide a secure home. They live in groups
of six to 12, with their trained, full-time live-in caregivers, called Family Teachers, in
homes resembling large, comfortable, upper-middle-class single-family residences.
Family Teachers train the children in their home under the Mooseheart Model of
Care, emphasizing calm, positive reinforcement of proper behavior and social skills.
At Mooseheart's fully-accredited K-12 school, children benefit from a student-
teacher ratio of generally 15-1 or less. In addition to an academic diploma,
Mooseheart students graduate with proficiency in one of several vocational
programs available like Cosmetology, Auto Mechanics, Health Occupations, and
others. Students with qualifying GPA's are eligible for full tuition-room-and-board
college scholarships, funded by the Moose and other sources. All high-school
students participate in a Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC)
program, and middle-schoolers and high-schoolers enjoy participating in a variety of
interscholastic sports.
