Richard and Andrew
are quick to REACTBY ANDREW CLARKE
TWO students have been re-
warded for their commit-
ment to engineering with
bursaries of over 3,000.
Richard McCormack,
from Frizington, and An-
drew Messenger, from Kirk-
land, will each receive 3,145
from The REACT Founda-
tion when they gain a place
on a university engineering
course later this year. The
money will help towards the
students' university costs.
Richard is a former West
Lakes Academy student and
is currently on a Year in
Industry gap year, while An-
drew attends Keswick
School.
Each West Cumbrian sec-
ondary school was asked to
nominate up to three stu-
dents who showed a keen-
ness to study engineering.
The winners were chosen
by The REACT Foundation's
trustees; Trevor Craig, Steve
Knight and Pete Woolaghan
(all directors of REACT En-
gineering Ltd); John Knox
(of Westcroft Consulting
Ltd); Rosie Mathison (nu-
clear opportunities manager
of West Lakes Renaissance);
and Terry Ponting (indepen-
dent business consultant).
All the students were in-
formed of their success at a
presentation, which they at-
tended with their parents
and teachers, held at The
REACT Foundation's offices
at Westlakes earlier this
month.
Pete Woolaghan, chair-
man of REACT, said: "We
think it is extremely impor-
tant to nurture future en-
gineers. The aim of The RE-
ACT Foundation is to
promote the opportunities
open to young engineers and
to encourage them to see it as
an exciting and viable ca-
reer.
"We have always been im-
pressed by the standard of
West Cumbrian students,
but this year was excep-
tional. Subsequently, we felt
it was necessary to increase
the bursary prize and re-
ward both Andrew and
Richard for their impressive
commitment to engineer-
ing."
What's in
a name ?
Dear Cleator Crack,
I WRITE to say how inter-
esting I found Margaret
Crosby's article about the
musician J B Senior, not
least because Senior is also
my surname.
My wife and I are the only
ones with the surname that
we know and we are both
native Yorkshire people.
The article was brought to
our attention by one of our
dancing friends, who like us
is also a keen dancer.
You ask at the end "are you
a descendant?'' but I think
probably not.
I say this because when I
started to think about it I
realised how little I knew
about my family back-
ground.
I do remember Grandad,
Oliver Senior, but as to any
brothers of his I don't have a
clue.
How I wish I could do a bit
of research, but even in re-
tirement there is only time
for a few time-consuming ac-
tivities!
I am aged 72 and was born
in South Yorkshire, not too
far distant from Batley.
Senior is a far more com-
mon surname in Yorkshire
than is the case in Cumbria.
When my wife and I ar-
rived in Whitehaven in 1962
there was only one other Se-
nior listed in the local phone
book at that time, however
then, home phones were the
exception rather than the
rule.
In the current phone book
there are nine Seniors listed
but I know three of them, me,
my eldest son (R E Senior)
and my youngest son (S Se-
nior).
Sorry I could not be of
more assistance regarding
your J B Senior article.
Geoff Senior,
Ladypit Terrace,
Whitehaven
