on, November 22
Christmas officially
begins for Edinburgh
on the evening of
November 22, when
the festive lights are
switched on and the
superb Christmas
tree on the Mound 8211
gifted by the people
of Norway 8211 is also
illuminated, with
open-eyed children
of both countries
standing by to
remind us of how
magical it all is.
And not only that.
As the Edinburgh
Wheel starts turning
and reaches for the
sky, skaters take to
the ice at the Winter
W
onderland in
P
rinces Street
Gardens, and the
Gluhwein flows at
the traditional
German Christmas
Market. Now Edinburgh
is putting the fest in festive
season. Here are some winter
spectaculars to look out for...C

rocession,

The
city8217s world-famous
Hogmanay opens
with a ceremonial
torchlight procession
and spectacular
celebration of fire
and music on
December 29.
Thousands of
burning torches, led
by a symbolic
wooden longboat,
make their way
through the city on
a stunning event
reminiscent of the
traditional Viking
celebrations. And
indeed, after starting
at Parliament
Square near St Giles
Cathedral (and
making its way
down the Mound
and along Princes
Street to Calton Hill)
it culminates with
the burning of a
wooden long boat 8211
and other fireworks.
