85m prison proposed
to house 480 inmatesPLANS have been
submitted for a new
prison.
The project, estimated to
cost up to 85 million, would
see up to 480 inmates housed
in the class 2A prison, to be
built next to the existing
Littlehey prison, near Perry.
The planning application,
which also includes an exter-
nal visitor centre, parking
and landscaping, has now
been submitted to Hunting-
donshire District Council by
the National Offender Man-
agement Service.
The proposal is to build a
new prison for 18 to 21 year
old male inmates on the
existing sports pitches next
to Littlehey prison, which
currently holds about 730
prisoners.
The new facility would
include a reception and
medical centre, educational
facilities, library and infor-
mation centre and
multifaith chapel.
The plans come as part of
the Home Office drive to
expand the nation's prison
capacity.
Following a review of pri-
sons in 2007, the Justice Sec-
retary announced plans to
provide a further 10,500
places by 2014, in addition to
the existing programme to
build 9,500 more places.
A spokesman from the
Prison Service said: "We
expect the pressure on
prison places to remain high
for the foreseeable future.
We will always provide
enough prison places for
serious offenders, those who
should be behind bars: the
most dangerous, the ser-
iously persistent offenders,
and the most violent.
"Prison is the right place
for such people.
"We are responding to
demands by pursuing an
extensive building prog-
ramme to provide the prison
places we think we will
need.
"In the long term, this is
intended to provide us with
sufficient headroom to ach-
ieve important aims, such as
bringing the End of Custody
Licence scheme to an end,
modernising the estate and
ensuring that prisons can be
operated as effectively as
possible as places of both
punishment and reform."
Residents have until
November 28 to comment on
the plans as part of the
consultation process and
statutory consultees have
until December 1.
If the plans are given the
go-ahead work on the site is
expected to start next year
and the first offenders could
be received from December
2009.

School's
Ofsted
praise
A PRIMARY school in St
Neots has significant
strengths and a clear
pattern of improvement,
according to Government
inspectors.
Ofsted inspectors said
that headteacher Stephen
Rouse leads Winhills
Primary School well, is
determined to raise stan-
dards and is well sup-
ported by the assistant
head.
Their report said: "The
school now benefits from
greater stability in leader-
ship and staffing. Pros-
pects for further improve-
ment are positive because
everybody is pulling in the
same direction and staff
share a strong commit-
ment to improving pupils'
learning opportunities."
A project which allows
pupils to learn at least six
languages, and the effect-
iveness of the early years
foundation stage, were also
praised.
The report said: "Pupils
found the breathtaking
pace stimulating and rose
enthusiastically to the
challenges set."
The school was encour-
aged to increase the pro-
gress of more able pupils
so they attain higher stan-
dards, foster positive attit-
udes to reading in Years 5
and 6 boys and accelerate
progress in science.
Mr Rouse said: "We are
delighted that the con-
siderable team effort to
raise standards over the
last few years has been
recognised.
"Work is already in hand
to ensure further imp-
rovement."
