Brian Rayson and father Barry farm at
Salmon Wells along with Brian's wife
Pauline and Mum Sheila who help out
at lambing. They have 380 acres and
farm sheep, beef and arable. "We
previously had a trailed mower, but
Paul Scandle from Rickerby's gave us a
demonstration of the Claas 260 Round
Baler in wet silage. It changed our way
of thinking and we never took it back,
"says Brian.
Since then we have bought a Claas 3050
plus mower.
"As we do contracting work, it has
helped us to cover more ground far
quicker and it makes a very tidy job.
Changing blades is done in seconds
and it requires little maintenance.
Our old mower had a conditioner on it, but we purchased a Claas rake which has done away with the
need to condition, the rake puts three rows into one neatly and with little effort, it only needs a low hp
to operate it so saves fuel costs too, the price was very competitive and it looks good too.
Multipurpose is the description with which Stephen Robinson refers to his
Claas Quantum 4700 Forage Wagon.
"I bought it to save on labour and fuel costs as it releases staff to carry on milking,
where normally there would have been another tractor and trailer occupied.
The system has worked very well, I certainly won't be going back to the other method.
I prefer a longer chop. I demonstrated quite a lot of other models, but none had
the specifications of the Claas which came as extras on other models . The finance
package was good too. I have had extra use from the Quantum as I have been able to
cart sawdust and maize in it also, which makes it even better value for money as it is
not sitting around .

ROLLANT 355
John Martin, Whitehill Farm, Heiton, farms 306 acres of arable land which is sown down with Spring
Barley. John took advantage of a special deal at Rickerby's Spring Show last year to change his Claas
355 baler. " The offer by Colin Potts and Neil Douglas at the show was too good to miss," said John.
"I like the Claas 355 round baler very much, it produces a quality bale for me to sell. I believe that you
can not get a better baler. I use Claas netwrap too for the compatibility with the baler, which means
that down time is zero. I am just half an hour from the Rickerby Cornhill depot and get excellent service
from the workforce there.
VARIANT 365
Steven and Mike Pearson are two cousins who understand the benefits of having a Claas 365 belt
baler , one machine to do two jobs is such a saving in time and labour," says Steven. Controlling
the operation from the cab is simplicity itself , and having one machine to bale and wrap and then
deposit the bales, so smoothly is a major benefit, the pickup rate is quicker too," he says. Steven
and Mike farm 250 acres of arable along with 50 sheep and 100,000 chickens and broilers.
QUANTUM 4700
QUADRANT 2200
Neil Armstrong of Thornton Mains took delivery last year of his fourth Claas Quadrant 2200
baler, which he shares with his neighbour Ian Martin of Galagate Farms.
"I started with a 1200 Claas Quadrant and this is my third Claas Quadrant 2200.
Both Ian and I know the machine well and are experienced in handling it. The Claas Quadrant
2200 can cope very well with the swath of straw produced by our Claas Lexion 580+ with a 9m
header. The simplicity of the baler, ease of operation, due to years of experience, all contribute
to the balers attributes. Our previous Quadrants have been single axle models, we very much like
the tandem axle on this one it improves the ride both in the fields and on the road, which helps
to alleviate bouncing and gives improved comfort for the operator, and the CCT control box is very
user friendly too." said Neil. The Claas Quadrant 2200 produces straw bales which are the most
popular size. Which makes them good for residual sale and logistically ideal for transportation,
for both loading and handling. We produce 9,000 to 1100 bales per annum of which one third
are utilized on the farms, with the rest being sold to livestock farmers on the West coast and
Borders.
"Rickerbys provide us with first class service and the Claas backup is excellent. We are very
fortunate that if we should suffer a major breakdown we are very close to Newbridge for spare
parts too," continues Neil. Thornton Mains and Murton is farmed by Neil along with his father
James and brother David, it is predominantly arable unit, and sown down is winter oil seed
rape, winter wheat and winter barley and vining peas, along with a 100 head of Aberdeen Angus
suckler cows and followers, which benefit from the straw for feeding and bedding. When Rickerbys
opened the Cornhill depot Neil bought the first Claas baler in October 1995.
