Jonathan Thonon celebrates winning the first KZ1 Final
Bas Lammers is tying with Thonon for the KZ1 championship lead as they both took
a win and a 2nd place
from qualifying, taking 13th on the final grid a
couple of places higher than Stevens.
In the Repechage Kazuya Ishii (J, Birel/
Parilla) went flying over a tyre barrier half a lap
in, launched by Pierre-Henri Nanot (F, Sodi/
Parilla). Mark Litchfield (Tony/Vortex) got
up to 6th fairly quickly then fought through to
3rd. Matt Truelove (Gillard/Parilla) started
last and was in 9th most of the time before
moving close to the qualification zone, but
clashedwithArnoSantamato(F,PCR/Vortex)
on the last lap so was 7th. Up front though
Nikolaj Bollingtoft (DK, Kosmic/Vortex) won
easily, leading home fellow qualifiers Glen
Keyeart (B, CRG/Maxter), Litchfield, Daniel
Mancinelli (I, CRG/Maxter), David Alabart
(E, Alonso/Vortex) and Patrick Fontner (A,
Maranello/TM).
Final 1 poleman Te Braak retained the lead
while Litchfield, who started 31st, made an
audacious move round the outside. Half a
lap later De Brabander took the lead briefly
before being taken back on the next corner by
Te Braak. The Belgian dived up the inside at
the last corner and held on for a lap before Te
Braak took control again at the first corner.
Kozlinski dropped back slightly during the
initial laps, but Catt began his push and was
followed into 2nd by Kozlinski and by fellow
Tonykart driver Laine. Te Braak was allowed
to pull away slightly by their battling and was
safely in the lead, but after seven laps a 10s
penalty for a too fast start was displayed and
appliedimmediately.Kozlinski,now2ndahead
of Catt, took the lead by default, but he wasn't
satisfied with that and carried on pushing to
get closer to the Zanardi driver, passing him
on the fast right-hander at the back of the
circuit on lap seven and immediately pulling
away, winning the race by a considerable
margin.
Catt wasn't quite fast enough to challenge
for the lead, and in fact after last season's
total dominance in KF1 and KF2 the Vortex is
now said to be the least powerful mainstream
engine after some staff were headhunted
from IAME Parilla to the resurgent Maxter.
However, the depth of talent at Tonykart and
Vortex means they are always challenging for
wins as we've seen at each race this year.
Before the start of Final 2, Litchfield's
engine had trouble starting so he was pushed
back to the pits to work on it, but his machine
soon came to life and he could take the start,
albeit at the back.
Kozlinski retained the lead but was harried
throughout the first few laps by Catt. He
seemed to lack grip and Catt passed him at
the hairpin. The Englishman immediately
started to pull away and didn't face a serious
challenge for the rest of the race as Kozlinski
was also passed by Convers and his team-mate
Jean-Philippe Guignet (F, CRG/Maxter).
Convers was initially as fast as Catt, and
apart from a wobble towards mid-race when
Guignet started to pressure him, drove a solid
race to 2nd. Things were more exciting for
Guignet though on the last lap a resurgent
Kozlinski started to make moves to take back
3rd and Guignet shut the door on him at the
last hairpin, sending him out of the race.
But Kozlinski's move had been pointless all
along as he had been given a penalty for an
unsatisfactory start.
Birel's 2008 KF1 signing Toman Libor
(CZ, Birel/Parilla) seems to be getting in the
swing of the premier class, holding off Te
Braak for 4th and the top Birel spot following
his 5th in the first race. Parrott started with
only Litchfield behind him after a first race
DNF but drove a good race to come through
to 13th using his second engine.
KZ1
Jonathan Thonon (B, CRG/Maxter) was
over a tenth faster than Alessandro Manetti
(I, CRG/Maxter) and Manuel Cozzaglio (I,
Intrepid/TM), and the top half of the field,
including eventual winner Bas Lammers (NL,
Top/TM), was separated by just half a second.
All three heat wins went to the CRG drivers,
with Manetti's two putting him on pole for the
first final, but neither of them were more than
half a second in front of main rivals Lammers
and Roberto Toninelli (I, Intrepid/TM).
Thonon made a slow start in Final 1 but was
back to challenge the initial leader Manetti
at the second corner. Thonon took back the
head at the start of lap two but Manetti kept
