ole position THESE AREEXCITING times for Edinburgh
Airport. The capital8217s main transport gate-
way has expanded dramatically in recent
times, emerging from the shadow of its main
Scottish rival, Glasgow, to become Scot-
land8217s fastest-growing air hub.
A quick glance at the impressive growth
of passenger numbers tells you all you need
to know...
T
en years ago Edinburgh Airport han-
dled 2.7 million passengers annually; now
more than 8.8 million pass through the gate-
way each year.
And, with new routes being put into place
every couple of months, not to mention the
planned extensive redevelopment of the ter-
minal building, Edinburgh8217s reputation as a
global hub looks certain to keep booming.
Indeed, the declared ambition of the
owner, the British Airports Authority, is
anything but modest 8211 26 million passengers
a year by 2030.
This winter, a
host of mouth-
watering destina-
tions are being
made accessible
directly from the
capital for the
first time.
Edinburgh8217s
bond with Poland
has strengthened
immeasurably over the past couple of years,
with thousands of Poles coming to the city to
work following their country8217s accession to
EU member status.
And there8217s plenty of traffic taking off in
the other direction as well, with budget
carrier Centralwings introducing new
routes to the historic cities of Poznan and
Szczecin this winter. Edinburgh Airport is taking off with planeloads of new passengers and fresh routesTRAVELA new plane to Spain BARCELONA AWAITSAnother new and exciting
