LEISURE CENTRES AND POOLS
EAST ANGLIA -- especially
Norfolk -- has been a popu-
lar location for many films
and television series over the
years. The North Norfolk
coastline and the historic
quarter of King's Lynn have
been particular favourites
with film-makers.
Remember Gwyneth
Paltrow walking from the sea
across the beach in
Shakespeare In Love? That
was filmed at HOLKHAM
BEACH in North Norfolk.
Nearby HOLKHAM HALL
was one of the recent set-
tings for The Duchess, star-
ring Keira Knightley as
Georgiana and Ralph
Fiennes as the Duke of
Devonshire. The magnificent
stately home was used to
recreate the interiors of
Devonshire House, the
London residence of the
Duke.
David Copperfield was
published by Charles
Dickens in 1850, a year after
he had visited GREAT
YARMOUTH, which features
in the book. The isolated
beach at BENACRE,
between Lowestoft and
Southwold, has twice provid-
ed locations for Peggotty's houseboat, for David
Copperfield productions in 1970 and 1999.
A star-studded cast for the 1999 production
included Bob Hoskins, Michael Elphick, Pauline
Quirk and Maggie Smith, and interior scenes of
the debtor prison were shot in KING'S LYNN.
The historic quarter of King's Lynn, near the
river frontage, has also been a setting for pro-
ductions like Martin Chuzzlewit (parts were
filmed at Bank House in King Staithe Square),
and, most famously, the Goldcrest film
Revolution in the mid-1980s.
Revolution, starring Al Pacino, centred on the
American Revolution, and King's Lynn was
transformed into New York of the 1770s! The
Purfleet and King Staithe Square areas (includ-
ing some tall grain silos now demolished) were
transformed into harbours and quayside ware-
houses, and an army of extras was marched up
and down King Street several times.
Sadly, the film was a box office flop, much to
the disappointment of many local people who
took a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be film
extras.
Dad's Army, a TV series about a World War
Two Home Guard Platoon, was a huge success,
running from 1968 to 1977, and was shot at
locations all over Norfolk and Suffolk.
There are numerous locations close to the
Stanford Battle Area in THETFORD FOREST --
Lynford Hall, Santon Downham, West Tofts,
Buckenham Tofts -- as well as Watton Airfield,
Weybourne Station, LOWESTOFT Britannia Pier,
Brandon Station, Oxburgh Hall, Ixworth House,
THETFORD Town Hall and Palace Theatre, and
many others too numerous to mention here.
For the 1970 film The Go Between, starring
Julie Christie and Alan Bates, many of the loca-
tions were in North Norfolk. The mansion in the
film was Melton Constable Hall (not open to the
public), while other locations were the village of
Heydon, near Aylsham, well as Tombland Alley
and Cathedral Close in the
centre of NORWICH, probably
the most complete medieval
city in the country.
Deepdale Farm at BURN-
HAM DEEPDALE, North
Norfolk, has been used for
films such as Dangerfield and
All The King's Men, while
Memphis Belle (1990) has
scenes shot at DUXFORD,
near Cambridge, home to a
spectacular collection of his-
toric aircraft.
HUNSTANTON, sadly, lost
its pier during the winter
floods of 1978, but the pier
lives on in Barnacle Bill, an
Ealing Studios comedy of
1957 which starred Alec
Guinness as a seasick sea
captain who buys a pier and
runs it as a ship.
In 1995, HOLME beach fea-
tured in the BBC TV drama
series Dangerfield, with Sean
Maguire.
Then in 1996, nearby
THORNHAM Harbour was a
location for the screen adapta-
tion of Wilkie Collins' classic
novel The Moonstone. And in
1998, both Thornham Harbour
and the mudflats and marshes
of Holme Dunes Nature
Reserve provided atmospheric
settings for another Dickens classic, Great
Expectations.
WALSINGHAM, a historic gem in a lovely
corner of Norfolk, featured in the TV series Seal
Morning, while MUNDFORD, on the edge of
Thetford Forest, was used for the TV series
Campion with Doctor Who actor Peter Davison.
These are just a few of the places in the area
that have been used for film locations down the
years -- proof, surely of the star quality of the
local countryside, beaches, historic towns and
country houses.
Aren't you glad you chose it as a location for
your visit?
Thetford Forest had numerous locations for Dad's Army.
