Gold or Silver Awards
In addition to this hotels and guest
accommodation may achieve a
Gold or Silver Award. Silver Awards
recognise exceptional quality at all
levels and Gold Awards are given
to the very "best of the best".
Accommodation types
and designators
Serviced accommodation is
separated into two types, hotels
and guest accommodation, with
various designators for each type,
as follows:
Hotels
These have to be licensed, offer
dinner at least five nights a week
(unless a Metro Hotel) and have all
rooms ensuite or with private
bathrooms.
Hotel, Small Hotel, Country House
Hotel, Metro Hotel, Town House
Hotel and Budget Hotel.
Guest Accommodation
Tends to be personally run by the
owners, who have to provide
certain additional facilities and
services at the higher star levels.
Guest Accommodation, Bed and
Breakfast, Guest House, Inn,
Farmhouse and Restaurant with
Rooms (no star grading).
Self-catering Accommodation
The layout and design of the
accommodation and the range and
quality of the kitchen equipment is
assessed, as well as the quality
and comfort of the bedrooms and
bathrooms and most importantly,
the cleanliness.
Campus
Covers the universities and
colleges that are able to
accommodate visitors during the
vacation periods on a bed and
breakfast basis. Generally the
rooms are ensuite and there will be
plenty of single rooms, so large
groups will not be a problem.
Holiday, touring and camping
parks and holiday villages
Star ratings reflect the overall
quality of the park from one to five
stars five stars being reserved for
parks of exceptional quality.

Walkers and Cyclists
If you're a walker or cyclist you
know how helpful it is to stay
somewhere that offers facilities like
a room to dry wet clothes and
boots, or which has a secure
lockable area for bikes, so look
out for these Walkers Welcome
and Cyclists Welcome logos on
accommodation that does this
and much more.
Families Welcome
If you are planning a break with
your family, look out for the
Families Welcome scheme, which
is awarded to businesses that
provide facilities and services for
families of varying ages and
combinations. Accommodation
displaying this logo provides
facilities specifically for your family
and provides information to help
make your stay more comfortable
and enjoyable.
Selecting your accommodation
The accommodation adverts on the
following pages are colour coded
to the town or village they are
situated in for easy reference.
Within each town, accommodation
has been laid out in order of grading,
size of advert, then alphabetically.
Accommodation that is waiting to
be inspected and have their grading
confirmed is listed at the end of
each town and has `Awaiting
Grading' in place of a grading.
