T has been three years since
the gates of MG's Longbridge
factory closed, but the
production line is back up and
running, thanks to new owners, so
I was looking forward to putting
the latest MG, the TF LE500, to
the test.
The revitalised MGTF has been
in showrooms since the end of
last summer in a limited edition
(LE) version, aimed at enhancing
the marque's prestige.
The LE500 is an edition of just
500 cars, selling for �15,995 with
every conceivable piece of extra
equipment.
Previously, this would have set
you back nearly �24,000, so in
these hard times the new car
really does look like it delivers
exceptional value for money.
So let's get down to the nitty
gritty.
The MG always felt good.
Stepping into the LE500 has the
easy feeling you get when meeting
an old friend.Yet there are subtle
but important upgrades which give
the distinct impression a level of
care, money and attention has
been lavished on the LE.
The 135 engine delivers the
same 134bhp and 1221bft of
torque, but the engine has been
returned to allow for the fitting of
a second catalytic converter in the
exhaust system.The result when
driving it? This is the best TF you
will have driven so far.
From cruising along empty
country roads and through towns,
to busy motorways and on wet
and dry surfaces, the car was a
pleasure and all the time there
was a feeling of solidity � a
complete lack of rattles, squeaks
and noises from the body.
The leather seats are
comfortable and free of typical
slip you sometimes find in
performance sports cars, which
enhances the driving pleasure and
adds to passenger security and
comfort.
