GREAT Yarmouth is the largest
seaside resort on the East Coast,
offering a huge variety of attrac-
tions and leisure options for either
a day trip or a lengthy stay.
Two MILES of seafront attractions plus 200
acres of golden sandy beaches all adds up to a
whole host of fun options to keep the whole
family going all day, every day -- all you need is
the energy to keep up!
And that's just in the daytime, for the stars of
show biz really shine when darkness falls.
The famous illuminations sparkle along the
seafront and big names from the world of popu-
lar entertainment appear in the summer season
shows.
But back to the daytime, when there are all
the ingredients for a happy family holiday -- sea,
sand, amusements and fun attractions, one of
the largest open air markets in the country, and
22 horse-racing days between Easter and late
October -- the first meeting is on Monday, April
13.
Joyland is Yarmouth's own children's fun park
with loads of rides to please everyone, while The
Jungle at the Winter Gardens is a children's
adventure play area for the Under 12s with
parental supervision.
Fun with a sporting streak can be enjoyed on
the crazy golf courses, or maybe you would like
to test your skill and judgement on the
renowned seafront bowling greens.
Stroll around the Model Village, an acre of
landscape gardens with more than 200 realistic
models of town and country in miniature.
The Sea Life Centre takes visitors on a fasci-
nating seabed stroll to see more than 70 marine
species ranging from octopus and seahorses to
sharks and conger eels.
MARITIME FESTIVAL
Yarmouth's Maritime Festival on the South
Quay has been such a success it is now an
annual event, this year taking place on the
weekend of September 5-6.
HISTORIC SIDE
Yarmouth also has its historic side. It is well
worth taking the time to discover the 13th centu-
ry town wall with its towers and turrets, the
Lydia Eva floating museum, maritime and
Elizabethan museums and the birthplace of
Anna Sewell, author of Black Beauty.
In 1724, Daniel Defoe commented that the
town had the finest quay in England, if not
Europe. South Quay has been restored in recent
times to resemble its former glory with a tree-
lined avenue and walkway beside the river.
HANDY BASE
ON TOP of all the family entertainment within
the resort itself, Great Yarmouth makes a handy
base for a wide variety of attractions in easy
reach for a day trip or outing.
The nearby Norfolk Broads are linked by
waterways that meander through many lovely lit-
tle market towns and pretty villages, while
Yarmouth is not far from the Suffolk Wildlife
Park, Thrigby Hall Wildlife Gardens, Pettitts
Animal Adventure Park, Pleasurewood Hills
Leisure Park, Somerleyton Hall and Gardens, or
Wroxham Barns.
On the other hand... a day (or even two) might
not be long enough!
NO NEED to take a trip all the way to Asia to
see that massive continent's exotic wildlife --
just head for Thrigby Wildlife Gardens at Filby,
six miles from Greater Yarmouth.
Asia is the most extensive of all continents
and the choice of species which could qualify,
from habitats as diverse as the Himalayas and
mangrove swamps, is enormous.
Most spectacular are the fearsome
Sumatran tigers (take the tiger tree walk or
the tiger tunnel for a close-up view) and salt-
water crocodiles, but there are also Japanese
giant Salamanders, Korean chipmunks,
Moluccan cockatoos, Russian hairy-footed
hamsters and Javanese green peafowl.
In the walk-through aviary there are pheas-
ant, peafowl, stork and ibis.
Afternoon feeds start at 3pm.
The large reptiles, like pythons and croco-
diles, are fed according to weather and avail-
ability of appropriate food.
You can get a close-up view of the wildlife
of Asia, like the saltwater crocodiles, on a
visit to Thrigby Wildlife Gardens, near
Great Yarmouth.
