THE RUDHAMS, East and
West, sit astride the main A148
Road, being a large community
that is well-placed for both
Lynn and Fakenham.
Hopes for a bypass for the
villages were dashed a couple
of years ago with the news it
would be postponed due to
lack of funding.
While the bypass, when it is
eventually built, will be wel-
comed by many, it will be a
mixed blessing for the many
businesses along the main
road who rely on the passing
trade.
For as many of you have
already found, there are plenty
of handy and interesting busi-
nesses all through the Rud-
hams. Call in soon and see.
GREAT MASSINGHAM is
a big village with its cen-
tral area dominated by
several large ponds, some
believed to have their ori-
gins as fish ponds for an
11th century Augustinian
Priory.
Sir Robert Walpole,
Britain's first Prime Min-
ister who is better known
for his connections with
nearby Houghton Hall, is
reputed to have been edu-
cated in Massingham as a
young boy.
Massingham Historical
Society, formed in 1997, is
dedicated to recording the
past of both Great and Lit-
tle Massingham for future
generations.
Massingham Airfield
was the home of a number
of RAF bomber squadrons
during the Second World
War. Although now
mainly farmland, it is still
in use as an airfield for
light aircraft.
