For perfect handling the Claas Scorpion
For a great spread - Rakes
and the new Claas Tedders
A conversation with Rickerby salesman Robert Bell at last year's Spring show, assisted Mr Spence of
Bankend Farm, Silsdon Moor with the purchase of a new Claas 2600 rake. This smaller version twin
rotor is ideal for working widths of up to 6.20m to 6.80m leaving the swath in a central position
rake a smaller baler to collect. Mr Spence secured the deal on Show day and has been very pleased
with his purchase.
Richard Mudd is Plant Manager at Tynegrain, who are based on the Tyne Docks, South Shields. One
of Tynegrains Directors is part of a farmer cooperative which was ordering a Claas Scorpion 7040
telehandler. We looked at the Scorpion and ordered two, one for Meldon Grain plant and one for Tyne grain.
Richard tells me that the Claas Scorpion is used with an 18 ft pusher when working in the sheds, and in
another shed it leads into the intake. Loading wagons is a further part of the Claas Scorpions duties, it has
a decent reach, for high sided vehicles, and we like the hydrostatic transmission which stops operators
using it in the wrong gear. The comfort for the operator with good visibility all assist when working around
what is a large site," concluded Richard.
Covering 4-500 acres in a day is no problem with the new Claas 2900 rake. R Stalker of Ratten
Castle runs a family farm with Dad Jonathon and son Craig, plus two full time employees. They
farm dairy cows plus followers, 200 beef and sheep and 600 acres of land. They also do contract
work, so covering large areas as quickly as possible has been made easier with the addition of the
Claas 2900 rake. "It performs very well, said Mr Stalker and leaves the swath in good condition for
collection."
Mr Murray of Fieldfoot, both contracted and farmed until last year when he left farming for full time
contracting. "Claas are on their own for excellence, he says," the Claas Volto 670 tedder, gives an
excellent spread, it is stable when operating and if required you can fit a border spreading crop
guard which keeps the crop away from the field edges and prevents wastage.
They are quick to service and repair and any down time is short.
A local contractor recommended a Claas Volto 770 tedder to farmer Mr Wood of Duncowfauld, who
tells me it is a great machine well made and does a good job. The 7 metre width saves on diesel
costs as we are picking up three rows in one go, said Mr Wood. Duncowfauld consists of 300 acres
of arable land with no stock at all, apart from 600 sheep which are overwintered.
Andrew and Carole Sanderson farm 350 acres including some rented land at Brackenbarrow
Farm, Deanscales. They have 150 dairy cows plus followers and 50 store cattle. Andrew attends
Rickerby's Spring show each year and last year he was interested in a Claas Volto tedder, with 4
rotors which he could use to scale grass for the first cut.
"It made a definite difference," says Andrew, "with first cut and heavier cuts, it scales the swath
into big rows and dried it out well between morning and afternoon, ensuring good quality silage
and ease of operation. They travel well and are easy to maintain," concludes Andrew.
"I would be lost without it, " quotes
Stephen Robinson of Longber Farm,
Lunesdale, referring to his Claas Scorpion
6030. Before we purchased the Scorpion
we had a digger, but it had very little in the
way of reach , I just wish we had purchased
one of these years ago. It is used for
virtually everything on the farm including,
buckraking, off loading pallets from
wagons, pulling silage trailers, stacking,
taking silage from the clamp etc. The
visibility is very good and the boon is low
and doesn't interfere. The Claas Scorpion is
good on the road and is almost as comfortable as a tractor.
We tried other manufacturers but after having the Scorpion on demonstration, we liked it so
much, plus the price and deal were good. It is a well built and sturdy machine and much proven
as it goes every day.
Stephen farms 230 acres plus 50 acres rented in partnership, with help from his Dad and one
full time and a part time worker. They have 120 Dairy cows plus 80 followers.
