RIVER BOAT
Sailing from Swan Hotel

THE BROADS are
Britain's only lowland,
wetland national park.
Winding waterways, quaint vil-
lages, windpumps and grazing
marshes make it a haven for wildlife
and a very special place for visitors.
It's a paradise for bird-watching,
fishing, walking, cycling and boat-
ing.
For a really lazy hazy day, visitors
can hire sailing boats, dinghies,
rowing boats and canoes; or join
one of the organised boat trips
through the whispering reeds along
some of the 200 miles of rivers and
boards.
It's the largest lock-free waterway
in the country, with miles of peace-
ful river banks and a serenity all of
its own.
Launches can be hired by the
hour and there are small boats to
explore the hidden corners of this
water wonderland.
Wherry tours take a journey back
through time. These huge sailing
craft with their enormous sails were
once the cargo carriers of the
Broads and now the handful that
remain are used for tourist trips.
Travellers will see the windpumps
that were built around 300 years
ago to drain the marshes, the reeds
that are still cropped for thatching
roofs, the nature reserves and the
wildlife including kingfishers, drag-
onflies, marsh harriers and rare bit-
terns and maybe a glimpse of the
swallowtail butterfly, the largest in
Britain and only found in the
Broads.
Exploring on foot can take you
even closer to nature and there are
several trails that take tourists well
off the beaten track.
They are signposted and some
are accessible to wheelchair users.
The Broads Authority organises a
Fun in the Broads programme
every summer, starting in April.
It ranges from dawn and sunset
trails round the waterways to story-
telling, Morris dancing, arts and
craft days, rail trips, bygones exhi-
bitions and puppet shows, all run-
ning right through to October.
There are Broads Information
Centres at Hoveton, Ranworth,
Beccles, Ludham, North Quay at
Yarmouth and at Loddon.
Leisure cruising (above) and fishing (left)
are two of the many pursuits enjoyed on
the Norfolk Broads every year. Perhaps it's
time for you to visit and discover a world
of relaxation and tranquillity.
