HERTFORD got their season offto a
winning start with an excellent victo-
ry in the first round ofthe Cockspur
Cup at Balls Park against one oftheir
league opponents on Sunday. After a tough season last year, which
saw the club relegated and then reinstat-
ed to the Home Counties Division Two
East after another team dropped out, the
win against Stevenage was a timely boost
before their campaign starts at Bishop8217s
Stortford tomorrow (11.30am start).
Hertford Skipper Scott Ruskin was
delighted with the win and felt the club
was now equipped to deal with the
league.
8220I was very pleased with our perform-
ance and the way we battled,8221 he told the
Mercury.
8220We8217re looking in good shape for the
season with four new players, including
Sandun Dias. He8217s looked great in the
nets, although due to postponements, we
haven't been able to get him out in a
match yet,8221 he said.
8220We8217ve also had Krishan Canagaseby
our leg spinner, back from injury after
playing only one game last season. We8217ve
been able to add variety and boost the
areas we needed to.8221
The game wasn8217t as comfortable as
Hertford hoped early on. They batted
first and were two wickets down with
only six runs on the board as Chris Wade
and CliffCavener were both caught.
When Will Bancroft was also caught
with only 29 runs posted things looked
ominous.
Ollie Ray put together a 35-run stand
with Ruskin, before falling in the 27th
over with 64 runs to Hertford8217s name.
Only 21 runs later, Ruskin was bowled on
41. Halfthe side were out with 13 overs
left.
Chris Box opened his account with a
six and was helped by some wayward
bowling that added 18 wides to the score.
Alongside him, vice-captain Rob
Darby was in confident form, hitting 47
before being bowled in the penultimate
over.
By that time, Box had been bowled
after a 69-run stand with Darby and Niz
Mohammed was run out in the same
over. At the end ofthe 45 overs Hertford
reached 193-9.
Stevenage began their innings in simi-
lar fashion as Box and Mohammed took a
wicket each in the early exchanges. The
latter added another during his 2-29 nine-
over spell before Mitchell Perry bowled
Adil Zargar to leave Stevenage on 77 for
four from 21 overs.
Dylan Slater helped Ashley Bayes take
the visitors8217 score to 99, before the Bayes
was run out two short ofhis 50.
Stevenage8217s tail-enders struggled and
Ray took full advantage, with five wickets
in six overs for 14 runs as Hertford won
by 72 runs with eight overs to spare.
The second XI picked up a draw
against Potton in Saracens League divi-
sion four.
They dismissed Potton for 142, Alex
Cooper doing most ofthe damage with
three wickets and James Mead and
James Lidgett picking up two apiece.
However, Hertford8217s batsmen found
runs difficult to come by with early loss-
es. Raj Patel held firm but lost partners
with increasing regularity until he was
ninth out for 42.
This left Mitchell Perry and James
Mead the job ofholding on for the draw
with Hertford 15 runs short.
The following day the team lost by
seven wickets to Roydon in a friendly.
The fourth XI beat Sawbridgeworth by
100 runs in their division 11 match (Hugo
Flint-Cahan 74).http://www.hertsessexnews.co.ukMay 9, 2008 MERCURY M 69H
