RUNNING along the cliffs from Sheringham to
Weybourne, and revealing superb views of coast
and country as the train climbs up through
Weybourne station to Holt, the heritage Poppy
Line is one of the country's finest preserved rail-
ways.
Built in 1887, the line was part of the Midland
& Great Northern Joint Railway that opened up
the Poppyland coast to holidaymakers from the
East Midlands and beyond, creating resorts like
Sheringham and establishing tourism as a vital
part of the Norfolk economy.
Most of the system was closed fifty years
ago, but the Poppy Line lingered on till Dr
Beeching's axe finally swung in 1964. It was re-
opened as a preserved railway in 1976.
The traveller of fifty years ago would find little
changed today.The time-warp Victorian and
Edwardian stations of Sheringham and
Weybourne evoke the flourishing days of the
rural railway but Holt station is both older and
newer! Older, because it was originally the sta-
tion at Stalham, built in 1880. Newer, because a
few years ago it was carefully dismantled and
re-erected as the Poppy Line's southern termi-
nus.
The big steam engines, too, are perfectly in
period: no wonder the line featured in episodes
of the evergreen comedy Dads' Army. The oldest
engine regularly working on the line is just three
years short of its centenary; the youngest (and
with ten driving wheels also the biggest) a mere
stripling of 66. The line's flagship engine, built in
1928 to haul express trains from London to
Norfolk and Suffolk, should be back in action
this year following a major overhaul.
HERITAGE ROLLING STOCK
But it's not just the engines that create the
wonderful nostalgia of the Poppy Line. The car-
riages on most trains are over 50 years old, and
there's a special train of wooden-bodied car-
riages dating from 1924 pioneers of the articu-
lated technology now used on Eurostar, and
described by the National Railway Museum as
the most important piece of heritage rolling
stock running in the UK.
NEW DINING TRAIN
This year, the Poppy Line is introducing The
North Norfolkman a top-flight train offering
Sunday lunches, evening dinners and Murder
Mystery wine-and-dine trips. The North
Norfolkman will be available for party or wed-
ding hire, and Weybourne station is licensed for
weddings.
Many of the line's passengers use it to reach
the nature trails of Kelling Heath and the glories
of the National Trust's Sheringham Park. Most
trains have a special van for cycles, and dogs
are welcome aboard: fares for dogs and cycles
are just 1 each.
Human fares are, alas, at the mercy of the
escalating price of coal but an all day hop-on,
hop-off Rover ticket still costs only 10.50 for an
adult and 7 for a child 5-15 years old (under 5s
go free), with 1 off for senior citizens. New for
2009 is a family ticket at 35 for 2 adults and 2
children (or 3 adults and one child), which
comes with a voucher worth 5 to spend in buf-
fets or the Sheringham station giftshop.
You should allow around an hour and a quar-
ter for the round trip more if you'd like to
browse the fascinating history of the line in the
William Marriott Museum at Holt station, or just
relax over refreshments at any of the three sta-
tions. There's plenty of car parking at Holt sta-
tion, and Sheringham station is alongside a big
public pay car park.
