YOUR NORTH NORFOLK RAILWAY SUMMER
SAVER VOUCHER IS ON PAGE 42
Fishing boats on the beach at Sheringham.
WANDER along the pebbled beach
at Sheringham and you will see the
fishermen's boats and crab pots
there -- a scene that has probably
not changed much in a century.
For Sheringham most definitely exudes nostal-
gia, with a blend of Edwardian and Victorian
houses, narrow streets
and old-fashioned
family entertainment.
Add the North
Norfolk Railway, which
can literally transport
you back to the golden
age of steam trains,
and you have a real mix of ingredients for a tra-
ditional family holiday.
For family fun there is the Splash leisure pool
with its giant water slide, paddling areas and sun
terraces, where the temperature is guaranteed to
be tropical, whatever the conditions outside.
And a visit to the National Trust's Sheringham
Park is worthwhile, especially in late May and
early June when the rhododendrons and azaleas
provide a colourful spectacle.
Sheringham Carnival Day takes place on
Wednesday, August 5. Carnival events run from
Sunday, August 2 to Sunday, August 9.
Sheringham Little Theatre will again be pre-
senting a summer repertory season. The box
office can be contacted on 01263 822347. The
theatre is open all year, with theatre, films, exhi-
bitions, children's shows, comedy music and
workshops.
The men of the origi-
nal community in Upper
Sheringham, a mile or
so inland from the
coastal resort, made
their living from the sea,
launching their boats
from the slopes of Sheringham Hythe.
As trade grew, the community expanded and
boat-building became another local industry.
Whelking was a major industry in the early
1900s. The fishermen's noisy beach auctions
were a colourful scene until the 1930s but
Sheringham never became a major trading port
-- probably because of the lack of a sheltered
harbour. But by this time Sheringham had grown
into a popular holiday
resort with the help of
its train link, and has
remained so ever
since.
