Racecourse is built not only on business principles
but also on a common passion for the sport of kings.
It8217s not often that one is able to put one8217s professional
skills and experience to work in an area of personal
interest, but for several years now, that8217s what we8217ve
been able to do for this noble institution.
Allied Irish Bank (GB) became the first Founding
Partner of the new Ascot Racecourse in 2005,
and we have provided banking support and advice
ever since. In particular, during the past two years
we8217ve worked closely with the Duke of Devonshire
and Charles Barnett (respectively Her Majesty8217s
Representative and Chairman, and the Chief
Executive, of Ascot Racecourse) on the Grandstand
project, completed so magnificently two years ago.
At the time, many observers were surprised that
a project of this magnitude 8211 the redevelopment
budget was in the region of 163220m 8211 was completed
on time and to budget. It8217s unusual, after all: news
headlines are all too often given over to time and
cost overruns for major public developments.
We at the bank weren8217t surprised at all. There
were, inevitably unforeseeable challenges but,
as key partners in the project, the keen working
relationship allowed us to track progress throughout
