YORKSHIRE TODAY
WEDDING GUIDE 63LEGALITIESIt is not only the groom8217s undying love that a
bride receives in marriage, but also his last
name. Many brides still feel that taking their
husband8217s name is a tradition they want to
observe, and it8217s still passed on when the marriage
certificate is signed. After that, the marriage
certificate can be shown to the relevant important
people such as the bank and taxman and they8217ll
be able to update their records.
Some, however, feel that they don8217t want to
change their name and wish to stick with their
existing maiden name. There is no legal process
that has to be observed to do this, and if a bride
wants to keep their name then in the eyes of the
law this is not a problem. There8217s also nothing to
stop a bride from having the best of both worlds,
by her maiden name in her professional life while
using her married name at other times.
If you don8217t fancy either option 8211 or the
groom wants to point out that he8217s now happily
married too 8211 then maybe the double-barrelled
route is the way forward. However, this is a
change that has to be legally ratified, and a deed
poll certificate will be required for both the bride
and the groom, as it would if you were changing
your name to anything. If the documents are
applied for three weeks before the wedding day,
they can be signed at the ceremony itself and
legal from then on.
Conveniently, you can apply for a passport in
your new name up to three months before you get
married. It8217s worth doing this as it means you8217ll be
able to use it on your honeymoon. Indeed, it can
save a lot of hassle abroad if all your travel
documents feature the same name, to avoid any
complications and tortuous explanations.
Although a name means very little when
considering the lifetime of happiness ahead of you,
it is wise to sort out name changes and official
documents as soon as possible. This will remove
the burden of having to sort it out in the first few
weeks of blissful married life.COURTESY OF MORGAN PHOTOGRAPHY62-63:Layout 1 29/11/07 12:32 Page 2
