here's much more to Scotland than just
world-class opportunities to enjoy
perhaps the biggest and best selection
of fishing in the world, as you will find out if
you can bear to put your rods to one side
even for just one afternoon.
From John O'Groats to the English Border,
the country is full to the brim with places to
go, things to do and landmarks to see.
No matter whether you're young or old,
adventurous or conservative, you will find
plenty in Scotland to tickle your fancy. All you
have to do is be prepared to look.
Naturally, the big cities are a huge draw for
most visitors, Glasgow and Edinburgh in
particular.
The former is the biggest city in the country,
with the latter the capital. Both offer fantastic
experiences for visitors and, unlike many cities,
are quite different to one another, despite
being only about 50 miles apart.
Glasgow combines modern and medievil
architecture, creating a quite striking and
unique style. Edinburgh, meantime, benefits
more from its rich Georgian heritage.
Both regularly make lists of the most
picturesque cities in the world and deserve a
visit, if only to explore the likes of Kelvingrove
Art Gallery or the Burrell Collection in
Glasgow, or to take a wander down the Royal
Mile or around the Castle in Edinburgh.
However, they are far from Scotland's only
cities. Indeed, Aberdeen, Dundee, Inverness
and Perth are also worth visiting, too, and each
will tick the boxes of all who visit them.
But, whilst the big cities certainly deserve
some attention, it is worth remembering that
there is an awful lot of Scotland outwith city
limits, and whilst it would be nigh-on
impossible to give all of it your attention,
there are some places that you simple cannot
turn a blind eye to.
Up in the north of the country, visitors have
been drawn to Loch Ness for generations,
some for its magnificent scenery and
picturesque views, others in search of the
fabled Monster that is said to inhabit the
loch's tranquil waters.
The Culloden Battlefield is also deserving
of a visit. The site where Bonnie Prince
Charlie's Jacobites fought the British
Government army in 1746 is preserved today as
a fitting memorial to the near 1,300 soldiers
who were slain on the moor.
Elsewhere in the country, Stirling Castle
ought to feature on any `must visit' list. The
home of many Scottish Kings and Queens
down the years it was the childhood home
and place of coronation for Mary Queen of
Scots, incidentally it sits atop Castle Hill
overlooking the former Scottish capital city
of Stirling.
Meanwhile, the south-west coast is
world-renowned for being the home of
Scotland's bard, Robert Burns and his old
cottage in Alloway is one of the country's
most consistently popular tourist attractions.
There are plenty more modern, family-
friendly attractions, meantime, including the
Blair Drummond Safari Park in Stirlingshire
and M&D's theme park located just outside
Glasgow.
The Falkirk Wheel, which re-joined the
Forth & Clyde Canal to the Union Canal by
way of a boat lift, has also become of the
country's most famous new landmarks since
it opened in 2002 as part of the Queen's
Golden Jubilee celebrations.
So, as you can see, there is plenty to do
to pass the time in Scotland when you're not
fishing and all you have to do to experience is
put down your rods and tackle for a short
while. Enjoy!
