Your Driffield 2009 5
T
HOUSANDS of peo-
ple gather in
Driffield's town cen-
tre each December 31 to
welcome in the New Year
with a mass celebration.
Driffield is one of the
few places outside
London where such a tra-
dition still takes place.
Old friends will meet
and new ones will be
made as people congre-
gate together to kiss, cud-
dle and sing Auld Lang
Syne amid a jovial party
atmosphere. Often, the
chimes of Big Ben are
played over a loudspeaker
system to herald the dawn
of a new year.
The annual event is
always warmly regarded
as one of the most impor-
tant family gatherings on
the town's calendar as
most people are in good
spirits and a high profile
police presence ensures
that it remains largely
trouble free.
