This week according to...

The Labor Department reported this week that 20,000 jobs were lost in January when expectations were
calling for 15,000 jobs created. The Unemployment Rate unexpectedly fell to 9.7%, giving a glimmer of
hope that there may be a light at the end of the tunnel.
Mortgage rates held steady this week near what might turn out to be the most aggressive levels of 2010.
The Federal Reserve continue its purchasing trend buying up $12 billion in Mortgage backed securities
in the latest week bringing the total to $1.173 trillion out of the $1.25 trillion since the program began in
January of 2009. The fed has said that the program WILL end on March 31. Then what? Well, I know
that I am having a Birthday that very day, so something good is bound to happen!
Also this week, the Mortgage Bankers Association released their weekly Mortgage Applications Index.
The MBA survey covers over 50 percent of all US residential mortgage loan applications taken by
mortgage bankers, commercial banks, and thrifts. The data gives economists a look into consumer
demand for mortgage loans. A rising trend of mortgage applications indicates an increase in home
buying interest, a positive for the housing industry and economy as a whole. More home purchases
can lead to more construction jobs and increased purchases of items to build a home. Furthermore, in
a low mortgage rate environment, an increasing trend implies consumers are seeking out lower monthly
payments which can result in increased disposable income and therefore more money to spend on
discretionary items or to pay down other debt.
So perhaps it will be a good quarter as we all know that it will be ending on a high note.
