ASK THE EXPERT PANEL:
Ailsa Taylor from The Wedding
Warehouse, Carlisle
"We get a lot of brides who say they
are uncomfortable with the tops of
their arms. Strapless dresses look
lovely on brides with larger arms if
they can find the confidence to wear
it. It will draw attention down the
dress and away from the arms,
whereas a dress with straps will
bring attention to the arms.
"Strapless dresses are also
flattering for larger brides whereas
brides with smaller busts may want
to wear a dress with a shoestring
strap.
"Two pieces are a good idea for a
bride who has a large bust but has
small hips because you can get a
better fit with each piece."
Tina Strong from The Wedding
Barn, Bolton near Appleby
"For girls with a fuller figure, we
have an unforgettable range of
dresses that have enhanced bodice
construction which give a perfect fit.
"For the petite girl we have a range
of gowns which are designed to
accentuate the bride's shape."
Joanne Bradley from Olivia James
Bridal, Egremont
"Asymmetric dresses are flattering
for many brides.
"You should choose a dress that is
suitable for the venue don't choose
a big dress if you are getting married
in a warm location.
"Jackets are becoming popular
because brides who are getting
married in a church want to cover up
their arms to keep them warm.
"They will also cover up tattoos."
Louise Higham and Pam Allonby
from Bridal House, Maryport
"Try on as many different styles
and colours as you can. You may
think you want a white dress but
ivory may actually suit you better.
"A laced-up back is also good for
larger brides and A-line gowns with a
straight neckline and detail on the
waist are ideal for pear-shaped
brides."
Joyce Young from By Storm, Gretna
Green
"Your wedding isn't a time to
experiment with high fashion. Take
an honest, good look at your shape
and choose a style that highlights
your best features.
"We look at what shape most
flatters your figure, what colour suits
your skin tone and what style suits
your character. The dress should
make you look and feel beautiful and
not overwhelm you.
"Don't take lots of people with you
when you go dress shopping take
either your mum or your best friend."
Louise Mounsey from I Do,
Cockermouth
"One of the most important things,
regardless of shape and height, is that
the dress fits well and is flattering
over the waist and hips.
"The bust should not be too tight
and should not be spilling out.
"Ruching across the body works
well for the larger bride while
anything with a vertical or
asymmetric line gives a slimming
illusion."
Honey Ashworth from Marrime,
Kendal
"I would recommend to start
looking for your dress about nine
months before you wedding day,
which includes design changes that
may need to be made and the actual
making of the dress itself.
"I advise all brides to bring lots of
ideas to their first appointment.
"When it comes to choosing the
right dress shape for your figure,
always try on a slim gown, an A-line
dress and then a full style so you
know what works for you and then all
dresses in that shape can be
eliminated straight away.
"Quite often what you think will
suit you doesn't."
Cover-up: A bolero jacket can
be useful in chilly churches like
this one by Rina di Montella,
above, while vertical lines such
as, right, by Joyce Young slim the
silhouette. Waist detail can be
good for pear-shaped brides
